Yes, "Defund the police" is a terrible slogan. But "reduce the mandate of the police, and put those resources into programs that focus on aspects of community involvement, while not reducing the safety-oriented mission of the police" doesn't fit on a bumper sticker.

So what would be a nice, short, catchy slogan that gets the point across?

Earlier I compared it to "Black Lives Matter", which had its own problems as a slogan. But even though it was a terrible slogan as troll bait, at least most people knew what it really meant.

With "Defund the police", I think it takes a lot more education to get people on board with what are some really promising ideas behind the slogan.

While Democrats have policies that are more complicated and harder to communicate in 5 words or less.

Obama did well with "Yes We can" and simply "Hope".

But changing healthcare is very complicated.

The Republican plan of do nothing was very simple.

"Repeal and Replace" was snappy but they never even tried to explain what they would replace it with and we see they did not accomplish this under Trump and control of both houses.

It's strange that the (R) carries so much weight with the public when it does not seem to matter to the previous leaders of the party. I think these are all correct:

HW Bush – did not vote for Trump in 2016; passed away in 2018

Dole – assume he voted for Trump in 2016; still seems to support him

W Bush – did not vote for Trump in 2016; does not support in 2020

McCain – did not vote for Trump in 2016; passed away in 2018

Romney – unclear on 2016 vote, assume it was for Trump; voted to impeach; does not support in 2020

^this is 100% correct.. everything goes back to the base being easily conned. The systematic effort to keep them uneducated is to maintain this advantage of course. The other edge is the redistricting campaign, which they have been very good at.

^This. The only way the GOP would stop pandering to Trump / Trump’s version of conservatism is if they lose bigly in November. If the party changes direction it won’t be because they have changed their minds about everything they believe it will be because they realize it won’t help them win elections / retain power. As long as the political tools of hate, fear, and division work they will keep using those tools.
