"Defund the police" is an unfortunate slogan because it sounds like you are saying "fire all the cops". As far as I can tell, that's not what most people mean when they say it. Proposals I've seen just move some of the money from the police to community-building efforts.

"Black lives matter" had the same kind of "imprecise language" problem. People immediately started saying "All lives matter" or "Blue lives matter" as a counter-protest.

Folks got over it though. People aren't playing those silly semantic games with BLM any more.

I don't know if "Defund the police" will be dragged down because of how it sounds. But words do matter and it would have helped to find a better slogan.

Agip is right this is a stupid idea that hurts the democrats to be linked to it. Democrats seem to have this self destruct need that I just don't get. Right after a number of people have watched looters and arsonists, some progressive genius comes up with the idea to defund police.

Sending in a mental health worker will not do in an emergency.

Right now Trump is NEGATIVE 13 in net favorability. Read that again. HORRENDOUS. You compare him to Obama??? At the same time in his first term, Obama was in positive territory. Yes, a 14 point difference between the two. This is day and night. I will never, like your best buddy, make guarantees, but right now Trump is in yooooge trouble, and you know it. Yes, it's all about the electoral college, and Trump got lucky last time and squeaked by in just the right states. A handful of votes in a few states would have swung the whole thing. But this time....he's behind in all those states, and it is incredibly unlikely he will survive a negative 13 net favorability.

Remember Obama, despite a decent size electoral college win, didn't crush Romney. In fact, he beat Romney by the same amount of votes in the popular vote, as Hillary beat Trump by! And Obama was in much, MUCH better shape approval-wise going into his re-election than Trump is.

Trump got lucky last time. His luck is running out fast.

in 2004, Bush barely squeaked by Kerry in electoral college, and won pop vote by 3 mil (again, there is that 3 mil figure). W. was in positive territory for net approval (sorry, I said "favorability" before) in the final months before the election. He was never anywhere NEAR Trump's number.

So again, like Obama, he was in positive territory for most of his time leading up to his re-election, and while he won the election, it was rather close.

Compared to W. and Obama's re-election campaigns, Trump is disastrously behind them in net approval. At this point, for him to win he would he would have to rebound like no one else has (and he himself hasn't before), or somehow pull off an unimaginably miraculous electoral college result, while losing pop vote by 10 mi.

Very, very unlikely.

I checked, and The Gap had actually shrunk to less than five percentage points on a day in late March. (Still a positive gap, of course, as there has been since President Trump's second week in office.) The recent ballooning of The Gap would suggest that DJT's photo op in front of a church perhaps was not as helpful as he hoped.

And of course he still hasn't had a single day of 50% or higher approval in the 538 poll-of-polls. Not one day of majority approval in his presidency, despite presiding for three years over a hot economy.

Kinda sad, really.

I've said Defund the Police is bad as a slogan.

But the concept of more access to mental health could prevent the next group of looters.

It doesn't help IN an emergency, it helps PREVENT the emergency.

We spend a lot of money policing drug addiction crimes where resources could be sent to dealing with or preventing drug addiction before it leads to violent crimes.

More police and more weapons for police isn't always the best answer for handling crime.

Invest in the resources to help people before their conditions lead them to crime.

Defund the police is not a slogan or practice that either candidate with promote.

Remarkable that he couldn't crack 50% approval in March and April, while "leading" the country through a once in a century public health crisis. People want to rally around and support the President during a national crisis, and Trump's approval rating did rise a little. But it never hit 50% and soon plummeted back to the low 40s.

Contrast that with some of the governors; Cuomo hit an approval rating of 77% in late April. I didn't look it up, but I'd bet that Dewine did even better.

No. It is not. It is a genuine cry of frustration and needs to be heard as that, but in practice, defunding the police would not be a good thing. How would we arrest those two Bubbas who killed Ahmaud Arbery? How would we arrest the KKK guy who just ran his car into a bunch of peaceful protesters? How would we arrest the mostly-white people who abuse and distribute meth?

How would we arrest Donald Trump when it is time to do so?
