Trump smells opportunity.
He did it. He knocked the virus off the front page and he is running in open field now. He is really diabolically good at this.
He took over the WH twitter feed and instead of its usual formalities is now a stream of trumpist id.
And today he'll make more headlines with some massive anti-china policy.
He's got anti-Twitter and race riots. And china. He wins for now.
He did it. Yay America.
OK, he's good at changing the headlines but does that translate into votes?
It doesn't seem to be helping his approval/disapproval ratings or his odds at winning the election.
I dare to say he is making it worse with the additional headlines.
He was at his highest level early in the crisis when he closed travel to Europe and held conferences about how to keep Americans safe.
Now he just stokes divisiveness and that has failed him.
People don't hate Biden like Hillary, so that winning strategy is out the window.
Americans really hate Donald Trump.

I'm not sure we can say yet that Sweden took the wrong approach, but it definitely looks that way. I heard a report recently that their infection rate was miles away from having enough to achieve herd immunity. Even Sweden will fail to attain herd immunity until we get a vaccine.
As far as their economic situation, the Swedish economy is almost as bad as their neighbors. So the net effect of their experiment has been that they have a huge number of excess deaths with almost zero economic benefit.
Don't fool yourself. America has taken the Swedish approach as well. We locked down for about a month to flatten the curve but we didn't follow through. The president just gave up and surrendered.
So now we are the 12th worst nation in the world for deaths per million. We have opened up but the economy has not snapped back. The situation is still dismal and there is no end in sight.
You can't fix this without beating the virus first. There are no shortcuts.
Listen. I'm pro-science. The administration clearly flubbed this response and caused many excess deaths. But a longer lockdown probably won't do us much good. If we open up now with a heavy amount of social distancing, hand washing, and mask wearing, we probably won't see an exponential rise like we saw in March/April.
Check out this twitter thread from a Hopkins epidemiologist:

I hope you are right. But it looks like the entire state of Georgia is experiencing exponential growth right now. We were the first to ease restrictions and it's looking like it backfired massively.
We are better equipped to handle it now, but governments need to send a more cautious signal if we are going to contain this in the fall.
The strategy has gone from "contain and eradicate the virus" to "if we are just more careful we can do better".
For anyone interested in the COVID discussion, a more substantive (and remarkably civil and intelligent) discourse has been taking place here:

Settle down, you’re giving him way too much credit.
The murder of Floyd and the subsequent riots have somewhat and temporarily taken the pandemic off the front page. This will be done within a few days and long forgotten about by most everyone when they vote in November.
His Twitter war is an embarrassment for him, even Trump supporters I know think this is childish. “Pre-teen Twitter queen” behavior.
Battles with China is not something Trump wants to draw too much attention to and he’s failed in them. He doesn’t even call it the Chinese flu anymore.

I really think you underestimate or misunderstand trump's appeal.
his people want little more than to see that he is fighting. 'he's a jerk but he's our jerk' gets him millions of votes, and if trump is fighting the libs and the blacks, it's tens of millions of votes.
he's looking again like a fighter (rather than a passive guy in the virus war)
he's had a great, great week politically.

I do not underestimate his appeal at all. I felt he could win four years ago because I firmly believed a lot of people were closet supporters back then.
Nothing he has done this week has grown his base. Black America is furious at his most recent tweets. They may be motivated to vote in November, that could hurt him badly.
His Twitter tantrum does not resonate with even his base, plus he’s getting his azz kicked and is left looking foolish and weak.

That's an amazing tweet. Substitute Minneapolis for Ferguson and it's current.

That's Trump's MO. He tweets what he thinks makes him look good in the moment, doesnt care if it's true or not and is oblivious as to whether he had previously tweeted the exact opposite point of view.
Trump looking weak here, a toothless executive order yesterday, twitter hiding his tweets today.

Yep and it also makes him look weak, even to his base.
This sort of thing happened under Obama but Trump would never allow it to happen, right?
Biden doesn’t get enough credits, his tweet from October was prophetic about a pandemic.
https://www.yahoo.com/huffpost/joe-biden-donald-trump-tweets-october-pandemic-102050875.html
Compared to Trumps tweets, Biden is streets ahead.
Over 100,000 dead citizens and rising.
One in four Americans have filed for unemployment during the pandemic.
Fractured re-opening without a coherent plan.
Minneapolis is burning, riots elsewhere too.
The President engaged in petty battles with his two biggest outlets - Fox News and Twitter.
An angry and likely motived black America. The idea that Trump is having a great week is ridiculous.

Nobody's talking about Biden's 'you ain't black" gaffe from last week anymore.

Also correct, Trump just made it completely irrelevant.
The GOP reminding black America exactly where they stand.

not true - it's still on right wing media
and the Trump campaign is going to weaponize it to lower black turnout in the fall.
you can buy GOP -sold shirts with those three words.
Young black men are already half out of the biden camp...this is going to cost some votes.
How Trump looks right now.

Biden said something stupid and apologized. Trump tweets or says something stupid on a daily basis and during his entire presidency he has never apologized even a single time.

I'm pretty sure race riots are going to pry some white old people back into the R column, yes.
They have been deserting trump but this will pull some back.
