In the final days before the United States faced a full-blown epidemic, President Trump made a last-ditch attempt to prevent people infected with the coronavirus from reaching the country.

“To keep new cases from entering our shores,” Trump said in an Oval Office address on March 11, “we will be suspending all travel from Europe to the United States for the next 30 days.”

Across the Atlantic, Jack Siebert, an American college student spending a semester in Spain, was battling raging headaches, shortness of breath and fevers that touched 104 degrees. Concerned about his condition for travel but alarmed by the president’s announcement, his parents scrambled to book a flight home for their son — an impulse shared by thousands of Americans who rushed to get flights out of Europe.

Siebert arrived at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago three days later as the new U.S. restrictions — including mandatory medical screenings — went into effect. He encountered crowds of people packed in tight corridors, stood in lines in which he snaked past other travelers for nearly five hours and tried to direct any cough or sneeze into his sleeve.

When he finally reached the coronavirus checkpoint near baggage pickup, Siebert reported his prior symptoms and described his exposure in Spain. But the screeners waived him through with a cursory temperature check. He was given instructions to self-isolate that struck him as absurd given the conditions he had just encountered at the airport.

“I can guarantee you that people were infected” in that trans-Atlantic gantlet, said Siebert, who tested positive for the virus two days later in Chicago. “It was people passing through a pinhole.”

The sequence was repeated at airports across the country that weekend. Harrowing scenes of interminable lines and unmasked faces crammed in confined spaces spread across social media.

The images showed how a policy intended to block the pathogen’s entry into the United States instead delivered one final viral infusion. As those exposed travelers fanned out into U.S. cities and suburbs, they became part of an influx from Europe that went unchecked for weeks and helped to seal the country’s coronavirus fate.

Don't disagree but what will also be energized is the anti-Trump crowd. There's no dislikable Hilary on the other side this time.

I go further and say he's the worst President ever. He definitely is one of the worst people in the nation. It is encouraging to see him losing support in key states, but it is still insane that so many people still support this criminal.

There are only two reasons a person continues to support Trump:

1) JUST stupid.

2) Racist.

There are no other possibilities.

This is particularly true as it comes out more and more that the virus is spread much more through droplets than from surface to face exposure. Droplets specifically pointed out in cases of singing in large groups, bar situations in which people are speaking loudly over music or other voices, etc.

A church service which is fairly well attended is one of the last places someone with an ounce of common sense should want to be.

The US is the positive story...now down to 25% of world deaths, after being in the 30%s for a long time.

7 day moving average of daily deaths in the US has fallen almost every day for around 2 weeks.

the same metric for the world has also been improving for several weeks, with almost the same consistency.

So that's all good.

Brazil is up to 22nd worst nation per capita, after being 28th worst one week ago.

No change in the states rankings.

I know it would be interesting to see if all the states opening will result in more cases and deaths. I just dont' trust case counts at all and I'm not sure I want to take the time to track both cases and deaths. Maybe I'll figure something out, since deaths appear several weeks after cases and we all want to know how opening affects the health of the nation.

It looks like our nation will pass 100,000 deaths on Memorial Day.

As we remember those who bravely fought and died for our country we must also acknowledge that this wartime president has surrendered.

Biden campaign is based on a premise that he is a good guy who brings decency back to the White House.

Trump supporters could not care less about decency. Being indecent is one of his biggest appeals. They don't care whether he is a good person or a horrible person. They care he is a strong person who fights for the forgotten men and women of America. "He might be an a-hole, but he is OUR a-hole" is the mantra.

So every verbal gaffe hurts Biden. Every time the liberal media is outraged by Trump's statement, it helps Trump. It proves that the liberal media is the enemy of American people.

You’re kinda right but you missed the mark on a couple of absolute key points.

He’s is not a strong man, he is weak AF, the thinnest skinned man child ever. He wears bucket loads of fan tan and spends an hour on his hair every morning. Strong “men” don’t look like this.

He also has done nothing for the forgotten man, he does not and never has given a damn about poor people or ordinary people. His entire life he has intentionally surrounded himself with celebrities, elites and politcians.

Seems like what this disease really needs is a big kick in a dense place...and then it's off and running.

Seems that it's harder to get that kick than some think. esp outside cities. .

NYC, N Italy, London, Madrid got that kick...doesn't seem to happen so easily outside dense urban cores. Esp when people know it is coming.

Not that the disease vanishes in less dense places...it just burbles along instead of becoming a giant gusher.

I'd amend this to say that the true magas do take this approach, and cannot be reached by standard decent US politics.

but the evidence is that female senior citizens have had it with Trump - they are walking away from him. And even some ...wait for it...christian evangelicals...are done with trumpism.

My point is that there are many millions of people who are repelled by trumpism and are now moving away from it. This is why he is bringing up Scarborough and other nutso things. Soon he'll go with black criminals and abortion, to get back the seniors and the Christians.
