Certainly in line with the reasoning of Trump supporters on this board. It's impossible to reason with that mindset.
Looks like a showdown over presidential mask-wearing is brewing. Today could be interesting. From CNN:
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is calling on President Trump to wear a mask ahead of his visit to a Ford manufacturing plant in the state today.
“If he fails to wear a mask, he's going to be asked not to return to any enclosed facility inside our state,” Nessel said. “…If we know he's coming to our state, and we know he's not going to follow the law, I think we're going to have to take action against any company or any facility that allows him inside those facilities and puts our workers at risk. We just simply can't afford it here in our state.”

Dems falling into Trump's trap once again. All trump wants to do is make the Ds look like tyrants telling Rs how to live their lives. And here the Ds hand him that. "Here Don, make us look like power hungry tyrants out, please."
GOP in action.
A georgia senator is under investigation for insider trading.
Since she is in trouble and needs help from AG Bill Barr, the georgia senator's family donates $1 million to a PAC supporting Trump.
Republicans buying justice again. In 3 years they have turned us into a poorly run nation.
Lord what would 8 years do?
Remember that Flynn is out of jail, Cohen is out of jail and Manafort is out of jail.
Republican justice in action. I can't even.

Okay, *that* was a big jump: The Gap has suddenly expanded to 9.6 percentage points. Man, it's just so volatile these days.

And the Dow just continues to perplex me. Boy, if we ever needed a reminder that "the markets are not the economy"!

You think Trump will pick up swing votes in this situation?
It seems like nothing changes people's vote. Most have been locked in for 3 1/2 years.
All it shows is that Trump is making an effort to divide Americans, not unify them.
Allowing Trump to break mask rules encourages civil disobedience of his supporters in grocery stores.
A non-masked person broke the arm of a Target employee the other day.
Trump is responsible for actions like that.
Yeah, about that... wrote:

some interesting stuff on polls going on now. Usually the response rate is near zero, and the pollsters are used to that and know how to adjust for it. But during the plague response rates have shot up, changing the time-proven ways of adjusting.
Each polling company has to figure out how to handle the increased response rate. I suspect that is a big reason for the quickly moving poll numbers you point out.

it's all about the trumpy base.
D politicians trying to force Trump to wear a mask will play really well with magas in the wisconsin and michigan hinterlands. Such actions will confirm their views that eventually the Ds will come for their guns, force abortions, take away their bibles and make their boys wear dresses.
Trump's only hope is to get that base highly energized... so they show up to vote.
Yes, Trump has only one play - energize his base so they all vote.
He's never attempted to increase his base.
But he has simultaneously energized voters who oppose him.
When more than half of the country has disapproved of you job during your entire presidency, energizing that group doesn't sound like a great political move.

There was a big dip in the 538 Trump disapproval rating a couple weeks ago resulting from the Monmouth poll (43% approve / 43% disapprove) which 538 rates A+ thus weight heavily in the model. The movement back toward higher disapproval since then probably has a lot to do with that poll aging out.

yeah this is one of many problems of having a salesman as president. All his life he instinctively and accurately picks his sales targets. Sometimes its rubes (Trump water), sometimes it's poor strivers (Trump suits/ Trump U) and sometimes it's rich people with poor taste (Trump condos).
Trump is absolutely fine in those instances ignoring everyone but his target audience. He knows yuppies aren't gonna buy into Trump U. That is how biz works and he's good at it.
But in this case his sales/marketing brain is a failure. He thinks all he has to do is make sales to his marks. He doesn't quite get that he doesn't have enough marks to keep his company alive for another four years. I suspect Mitch is gonna panic in August and start doing non-trumpy stuff to make the R tent larger than just spankers.
Namely, Rs will try to get white senior citizens back on the SS GOP, using classic GOP racial dogwhistles. Expect lots and lots of stories about black criminals.

This is the classic dilemma with dealing with trolls. You're faced with the option of not calling them out for misinformation and letting it stand or calling them out and getting dragged into their game.
There's not a good way for society to deal with someone who doesn't give a flip about destroying the fabric of a functional society for personal gains unless the overwhelming majority does not accept such behavior. This doesn't get better until real conservatives have had enough.

this is the problem with today's GOP. They have absolutely no shame. They are so terrified of Dems that they have okd doing virtually anything to win. Lying, law breaking, wrecking the DOJ, criming, breaking every norm...GOPers just don't care about honor or shame anymore. They are like trolls, yes.
Solving this is hard. The dems have some sense of shame so they will try to go high, while Rs go into the gutter and accuse Joe biden of being a pedophilic gun grabbing Christ hating tyrant.
Fox could not be more effective as a destroyer of America than if freaking Stalin had invented it.
trump again doing russia's will.
Now they can cheat on arms treaties and we are much less likely to know about it.
When trump is out this isn't going to fix quickly. Allies and enemies alike will know that whatever they sign could easily be taken away after the next presidential election. This is how wars start - proof of mistrust.

Slate says Pompeo had state department staffers pack up family homes for the family, pick up people at the airport, and have taxpayer funded campaign events.
So he fired the inspector who was on to him.
Classic trumper move, and shows the Rs have zero shame. He will only rise in R consideration, being a warrior against deep state tyranny of rules and norms.
Note that Pompeo wants to be president.

betting odds edging better for the Ds.
Slowly but surely.
Today is the best yet: 53-50 that a D will win the WH, per predictit.

They picked the most clueless people from thousands of Trump supporters to make them look bad. This will only energize the Trump base because it shows how the liberal media look down on the forgotten men and women of America. The liberal media are creating these snarky propaganda video because they want President Trump to be reelected. Trump presidency has been good for their ratings and they want four more years of that. The gullible viewers are played by the media elites who are laughing their way to the bank.

The trump base needs little energizing. His base is going to vote as they still can't see that, for most of them, he accomplishes little.

Lot's of stuff going on in Michigan. Biden is leading in polls. Trump pushing to "liberate Michigan", but the polls I've seen show most people in Michigan want to re-open more slowly, when it's clearly safe to do so. Whitmer's handling of the coronavirus gets a much higher approval rating than Trump's. She was elected a year or two ago by a pretty comfortable margin. So attacking the governor may not be a wise strategy.
On top of this, a dam broke and there's massive flooding. Whitmer's asking for federal help. And Trump is attacking Michigan's vote by mail program, calling it illegal and bringing up voter fraud. He's threatening to withhold federal aid which has already been approved, ala Ukraine.
The vote by mail program was approved, apparently by a good margin, two years ago by Michigan voters.
He may be playing to his base, but he's going to need some people who maybe can go either way.
And he doesn't seem to be trying too hard to win their votes.
