Chicago police run a vehicle impound racket
Imagine dropping your car off at the local mechanic because you need to get your engine tuned up.
A few days later you come back to pick up your car, only to find out that it has been impounded by the police.
That’s what happened to one couple in Chicago.
It turned out that one of the mechanics took their car out for a joy ride. He was driving too fast, was pulled over, and arrested for driving without a license.
The police then impounded the vehicle, even though it wasn’t his.
The couple went down to the police station to get their vehicle back, but the police insisted that they pay thousands of dollars, even though they did nothing wrong.
Meanwhile, the police are charging them storage fees to keep the vehicle in the impound parking lot.
The couple managed to scrap together the money to have their vehicle released… only to find out that the police had already sold it at an auction!
This wasn’t an isolated incident either. The City of Chicago does this countless times per year, for offenses as minor as littering and playing loud music.
(Chicago brings in about $28 million per year impounding cars and running up storage fees.)
Now the Institute for Justice is helping the couple lead a class action lawsuit challenging this Civil Asset Forfeiture racket.
They argue the scheme violates due process, by forcing innocent vehicle owners to account for crimes drivers committed. Plus, holding the vehicles ransom until fines are paid is an unconstitutional seizure.

Perhaps the most significant revelation in the hundreds of pages of lightly-redacted documents is a detective's report in which a Cook County "prosecutor" is said to have told officers to stop investigating the case and then predicted how the case would be resolved—literally weeks before it happened just that way.
"Once Smollet was indicted by the Grand Jury on February 28, 2019, CPD was informed by the [Cook County State's Attorney's Office] that they could no longer investigate" the fake hate crime case, a detective wrote in a report that closed out the case on Mar. 28th.
The detective the prosecutor who handled the Smollet case, Risa Lanier, told him on the day that a grand jury indicted Smollett that her office would need all evidence by Mar. 11th.
Yet, in the same meeting, "Lanier informed detectives that she felt the case would be settled with Smollett paying the city of Chicago $10,000 in restitution and doing community service."
As it turned out, no one from the State's Attorney's Office ever asked for the case evidence. And, weeks later, on Mar. 26th, Lanier and Smollett's attorneys requested an emergency court hearing in which sixteen felony counts of false report were dropped against the actor without any of the usual diversionary programs or alternative prosecution plans being put into place.
Instead, precisely as Lanier had predicted weeks earlier, Smollett forfeited his $10,000 bail bond to the city. And, prosecutors claimed, the actor performed "community service" in two preceding days by helping at the Rainbow PUSH gift shop. (Rainbow PUSH would later dispute that Smollett's work was "community service.")
Another batch of supporting records, including detectives' handwritten notes, are expected to be released next week. Also forthcoming will be about 70 hours of surveillance videos that detectives collected during their investigation.
Police records released today show that the infamous tuna sandwich that Smollett ordered at Subway before being "attacked" was not for him! It was for his friend and choreographer, Frank Gaston Jr. Smollett told police that he ordered a salad for himself. The vast CPD files released today do not indicate if the salad survived the attack as smoothly as Gaston's sandwich did.
Smollett said that he knew the man in the photo for about a year and that he had been his trainer for about a month.
The document then states, “Victim [name redacted] realized that the photos he viewed were of the persons that were in custody at this time. Victim [name redacted] said it can’t be them, ‘They are black as sin.'”

On the January 29 phone call, which Chicago PD just released, the friend says Jussie's "attackers" wrapped a noose around his neck, after getting jumped as he left a Subway restaurant.
The caller says Jussie didn't want to file a report, but he was going to force him to do so. The male friend sounded panicked as he said, "They put a noose around his neck" and added ... "this is really f**ked up."
And ... we talk more about this than the regular shootings in this country.
Jussie Smollett failed in a bid to get a new judge for a special prosecutor’s investigation into his orchestrated hate hoax.
Judge Michael Toomin is tasked with overseeing a prosecutorial review of Smollett’s court case. Criminal charges against the Empire actor were inexplicably dropped, with a Chicago District Attorney personally connected to the actor shutting down criminal proceedings in spite of overwhelming evidence suggesting Smollett filed a false police report.
The suspicious handling of the case led to Judge Toomin’s approval of a special prosecutor, who will have the authority to press charges against anyone involved in the improper adjudication of Smollett’s case, and the actor himself. Judge Toomin is yet appoint a special prosecutor.
Smollett’s attorneys have pledged to continue to fight back against Judge Toomin, hoping to squash the court proceedings regarding the hoax.
