A few Trumpers here have made the argument that the governors are the ones responsible for bad numbers in states like New York. They are trying to shift the blame away from our incompetent president.
This is obviously wrong. There are two things that apparently have a large macro-effect on the numbers:
1) Population Density
2) When the outbreak started ramping up in a particular state.
Compare the top ten states in population density with the top ten states with highest deaths per capita:
Density: Deaths per capita
New Jersey: New York
Rhode Island: New Jersey
Massachusetts: Connecticut
Connecticut: Massachusetts
Maryland: Louisiana
Delaware #11: Michigan
New York: Rhode Island
Florida #23: Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania: Illinois
Ohio #12: Maryland
Notice that seven states appear in both lists! And two of the states, Delaware and Ohio, just barely missed the top ten. They rank #11 and #12 respectively in per capita deaths.
The only outlier is Florida, which is #8 in population density and #23 in deaths per capita. Does that mean that Florida has done a better job? That's possible, but doubtful. The virus took hold a little later in Florida. And unlike many states on the list, Florida's cases and deaths have not started to level off. So the future will tell the tale.
We won't really know which states did the best job until probably this time next year. But it's clear that so far, population density dictates the spread a lot more than the governor.
We also know that a strong national response makes a huge difference. Other nations beat the virus. America has not. America is weak and pathetic. The blame for that belongs on our weak and pathetic president.
