I've started looking at a simple 7 day average of deaths....that measure is probably the best and it does show some improvement, to 5,225 deaths per day. The highest number was 6658, in mid-April. The slope downward has been fairly steady.

So by that measure, we've seen some solid improvement globally and in the US.

USA continues to get worse relative to other nations in terms of per capita deaths . We were 16th worst, then 15th worst, then 14th worst, now we are 13th worst. Yes many of those nations we' 'passed' are miniscule minor nations like the Channel Islands.

Sweden is steady in 10th place.

We are actually 12th, the Isle of Man is listed as a country, it is not a country, it is part of the UK.

I'm kind of playing devil's advocate here, but, even with the benefit of hindsight, how would you recommend that the president minimize covid-19 deaths while still keeping unemployment low? I fail to see any course of action that could have allowed businesses to stay open while still keeping infections at a manageable level.

That is fairly straightforward - but it would have taken real leadership.

I started really watching the numbers in early March. Within 3 days I knew that the country was going to need to be shut down and I posted that here. If I can do that then there is no doubt that the folks whose job it is to watch these things knew exactly the same thing by late February.

The POTUS should have gone into full lock down mode, coordinated and motivated at the federal level in late February. He should have vastly increased testing and instituted contact tracing right then. A six week shutdown at that time along with a solid testing/contact tracing/quarantine regime would have resulted in a few hundred deaths total and the country long since back in business by now.

But that would have taken real leadership.

This "ranking" is determined by two things:

1) How well a nation and its leaders have handled the crisis.

Because of #2, we won't fully know about #1 for awhile.

The same logic applies to our US states and territories. While New York has most deaths per capita right now, it's entirely possible that an open state like Texas or Georgia will surpass New York eventually.

It's too early to tell if the Swedish experiment has worked.

And having a pandemic response team would have made a huge difference in those early days. Obama set that up, but Trump fired them.

Seems unlikely that Norway, Finland, Denmark will get as bad as Sweden but sure, it's an ongoing project:

Sweden: 314

Norway: 40

Finland: 47

Denmark: 90

Apparently no one can ever remember the DOJ dropping charges after obtaining a guilty plea, ever.

When the government actively tries to destroy institutions and norms, that's when you turn into Argentina.

They were one of the richest countries in the world but they elected trumpish people and that was that - slide into poverty and political chaos.

That's our route if we re-elect this guy. It might still be our route, given the tens of millions of magas who aren't going away.

Dems need to win in order to air out all the crimes. There are so many we can't even remember them.

I've started switching methodologies to 7 day moving averages. What I was doing was not working to show the small but regular improvement in global and US daily deaths.

globally, the 7 day average of daily deaths was the lowest it's been since around April 6. That is good.

In the US, the same measure was the lowest it's been since April 13.

So that's good.
