There's a false dichotomy, and it's all over these boards...
The world is not black and white, it's 50 shades of gray (forgive the crappy novel reference).
Fact is, people who want to totally open up and people who want to cower indoors are both problematic. The UN just estimated that 130 million ppl could be on brink of starvation by end of 2020 given current lock-down measures. However, if we open too early, we might see spikes...
So the question remains: what's the balance?
If you wanna call ppl stupid for wanting to work because they have spouses and kids and no money, that's on you. If you wanna call ppl stupid for wanting to stay indoors because they're immuno-compromised, fine.
What we do know is sunlight is good and nature's lovely disinfectant. Heck, this is nothing new, many of us love to run on a nice sunny day, it does the body and mind good.
Immune systems do weaken when inside and when not exposed to other people. Many of us would be fine going back to work. We might get sick, but the fatality rate of covid-19 is nothing crazy. Most of us will be fine. If we shut down the whole economy for much longer, we'll have worse than the Great Depression. Just consider the effects of depression, mental illness, anxiety, lack of food and resources, domestic abuse, crime - and of course, all the people who will die because they are turned away from hospitals due to covid-19 priorities.
Bottom line: it's time to open up. Smart, pragmatic guidelines to get most of us back to work and safeguard the elderly and vulnerable.
