The one thing that Gwen is missing is a lot of running miles, many at pretty decent pace. Before NYC she had never run further than 16 miles, and probably did not (again) until several months after Stanley was born. When she was at Wisconsin she ran for less than 24 months after starting as a swimmer; she was encouraged to switch by her high school coach. Her best performance was a 3000/5000 double at Big Tens (some years that is easier than others).
The notion (by others) that she has not worked very hard is ludicrous. People keep bringing up the good recreational Tri athletes. No one had ever won more than 3 ITU races in a row; she won 11 straight, some times making up several minutes in the run after missing the lead group of riders. I suspect that she would do better in warm-weather races because many of the Tri are pretty warm, and you go pretty hard for almost two hours. A runaway Gold Medalist in an endurance sport is not a dilettante. Her form is inefficient for a marathon and it is slowly getting better and it gets rougher still as she tires. The Tris are not that easy, note that very few high-level runners ever succeed in switching. She wanted a life (tri training is a lot of hours) and a different challenge. What is the goal of an Olympic Gold medalist supposed to be, top-10 US woman?
BTW, some occasionally say that she should do the Ironman; there is not a chance that she is interested in doing that, even if her Tri fans might wish for that.
