A "master lap" is a combination of 2 laps each from lane 8, 7...2,1, 2...back to 8 or something like that. That all should come up to 12.8k a Master lap. A genius idea to make easy things utterly complicated.
I've been running ultras since 1987 and followed the sport for over 40 years. In that time, I've also crewed many runners, volunteered at races for days on end including flying interstate on numerous occasions to do so, been a committee member and national selector, a long-time race director and a consistent advocate for the sport. Pretty much all these have been at expense to me and with a motivation to make the sport better for all involved.
That's an impressive ultra career especially if you are still running them. I've been in it since 1996 and see very few still around from the early days. The sport has changed quite a bit.
Last ultra was 2019, I'm afraid.
I was running marathons for four years and doing triathlon before getting into ultras, so there's been a lot of mileage over the years. My body is happy with about 20 to 30km/week of running these days.
I just do enough to keep fit, enjoy "racing" 3000m to 10km most weeks, a few triathlons over summer and plod through an Ironman once a year. Been getting into steeplechase in the last year as something new.
The longer the distance, the greater impact of shoe technology. Today we a woman runs 2:09 at Chicago.
Yiannis Kouros records will eventually all be beaten, but he'll eternally remain in the GOAT debate.
The 2:09 today at Chicago wasn't about the shoes......that was a clear case of PED use. I won't even require a PED test for Chepngetich as proof, just ban her
To 225runner: "He attempted the record" is false. To attempt means to follow rules that make the record certifiable. That was never done. And that really matters:
1 - These are not race conditions. In some ways race conditions help give competition, but on the net they can hurt. Having to constantly go around people and spend energy talking and acknowledging is part of racing.
2 - Having consistent pacers as needed is not normal. Pacing happens but this style is excessive and could very possibly involve muling as well.
3 - The distance is not easily verifiable and has no credible certifier. If you disagree I am not going to go into details unless you have read the other comments on this and appear to be serious.
4 - Most importantly the medical aid is highly suspect. The thing you need more than anything in races like this is miracle cures. Those exist and are illegal.
These infractions add up to a ton of time/distance benefit. No sense weathering a guess but he would fare much worse of a time if he gave an actual 1000M race a try.
On Strong arms comment, I would be someone who could have a crack at it. I would definitely not hit NBs numbers but I also would not be breaking the rules. Best guess I would be in the 13 to 16 day range depending on how much I care.
The moment he started the event without another 2 male competitors he excluded any opportunities to have a ratified result including an official record. 3 competitors are the minimum. But then how would 3 simultaneously run "master laps"...
Projected finish at average pace Wednesday 4.30am, 12 days 11 hours 30min
Average pace at this point is nonsense. Pace of the last 24 hours might be more helpful. But no idea what that would be thanks to the genius set up from the timing company.

It's just numbers, nobody knows what will happen next. Moving this poorly after an early finish yesterday would suggest any decent running is dome. Just how much ground he can cover before they lose access to the track.
What if the guy gets 1 speaking gig a week at an average of $25k (it’s a stretch but makes the numbers easy, and I’m also not doing the Aussie dollar conversions because don’t feel like it). Say he keeps the money for the first 12 weeks as a paycheck ($300k for the year before taxes) and then gives the other million to homelessness as a tax write-off? I think that’d put a lot of talk to rest. Now that’d be a real go for charity, and I wouldn’t bat an eye at the 300k for the feat

It''s better if others do the talking for him, it's not his strong point. He's a well branded name and image.
