Some jobs are listed there and are genuinely open to applicants beginning with listing. Most jobs are posted well into the real, behind the scenes conversations, unofficial reference checks, clandestine (telephone) interviews, and negotiations. The top state jobs are often completely decided before the position is posted... three to five candidates must be interviewed by a hiring committee with a set list of questions to satisfy public job rules.
So this thread is a combination of retirements, firings, and surprise vacancies (someone took a job and the dominos start falling). This thread happens year after year because students see someone on campus in a tie and a fresh haircut, interviewing, or a coach knows some underground intel going around at conference or nationals.
A surprising number of coaches watch this thread, even if they aren’t job hunting.
