Well Trump himself denied that it was a problem after they declared it.

Other world leaders acted before the WHO declaration, eg Australia treated it as a pandemic in January already.

I agree with you 100%. Absolutely 100%.

My "mathematical certainties" to date were, in fact, mathematical certainties for the simple reason that they spoke of things that were already baked in. Weak SIP on day W followed by strong SIP on day X WILL result in a drop in new cases on day Y which WILL end up with fewer deaths on day Z. That is all very, very simple. So simple that I keep being surprised that so many do not see it.

BUT, you are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT that looking further out than the next three weeks or so involves things that are not yet baked in. Things that involve, as you CORRECTLY point out, "how people choose to behave." That is why for any longer term projections I have always couched them in the key uncertainties involving:

1) The Agip Coefficient (which happens to be getting a bit of attention right now in the media and from Fauci)

2) The possibility of a warm weather miracle

3) Human decisions (SIP and such)

But yes, you are right. Clearly and undeniably right. And I want to come back to you (and everyone else) on this shortly.

I'm not going to do a summary of 4/7 data- it was a terrible, terrible day.

The only things I'll throw out there are:

1) the last 3 Tuesdays have each been pretty bad...there may be some kind of weekly pattern.

2) 3 day averages aren't nearly as bad as 4/7.

3) Italy and Spain continue their descents down the backside.

But good lord today was awful.

It's hard to believe he travelled all the way to Guam to give a long, rambling speech to the crew. In it he mentions that Captain Crozier might be too naive or stupid [for not understanding that his letter would be leaked], but then he does not stop to think that his own rambling could be leaked.

He characterizes Crozier's actions as betrayal, which seems plain wrong.

PM 2.5 means airborne Particulate Matter, 2.5 microns in diameter. To get an idea of how small that is see the image below. Ridiculous small, and incredibly hard to filter out.

MERV is a measure of how well a filter removes small particulates from the air. The higher the MERV value a filter has, the better it is at catching particles.

A home air filter is MERV-6. Most at work filters are MERV-8; MERV-13 in some buildings (this catches sneeze particles and many odors). Hospitals have MERV-15, or better, air filters.

N-95 masks are rated at MERV-15.

Now, for PM 2.5 you need MERV-17.

Below is a chart showing MERV values and what they can catch. The hardest to catch are viruses which are smaller than bacteria, and also much harder to catch than cigarette smoke.

Human behaviour is not "baked in". Nor is our susceptibility to the effects of the virus. Behaviour and biology will vary from individual to individual and between communities. Self-isolation and social distancing, which are the key factors in transmission and thus fatalities, are not perfect observed. There are some people who fail to comply with social distancing. There are states that are not imposing it. We can see that as a policy it has an effect in a general sense but that means no exact figure can be used as part of a formula to measure that effect. This reinforces my perception - which I have formed on the basis of what medical experts say - that there are too many variables in the pandemic for us to be able to do much more than make approximate estimates about what will happen. Those estimates depend on what we continue to learn about the virulence of the virus and how we choose respond to it - and no response has been fully consistent, least of all in the US. Your figures, at best, may tell us what might happen - not what will happen.
