We were unprepared and slow to react to covid-19 because of a political and philosophical orientation, most reflected in Trump's rise to power, that values present gain and is irresponsible to future consequences. Its just a very entrenched patter:

Let's get rid of the pandemic response and intervention team. We don't need it.

Don't worry about the coronavirus is just like the flu and will disappear in the summer.

Usually the time when an economy is doing well is the time to lower deficit spending because you might need to do it when the economy stagnates, but we are not concerned about it. Tax breaks for everyone particularly the top 1%.

Global warming, that's silly but even if true , so what. Those scientists are lying because its in their best interest anyway.

Controls on pollution, but that might hurt business. Car emission controls lets loosen them.

Government abuse of power well that's just the media talking. Don't worry about it.

The Russian's interfering, well everybody does it so no sweat. Cyber hacking, well what are you going to do?

Obama care, well let's cripple it. Everyone doesn't need easy access to insurance.

This goes on and on and on. Its Trumpism.

I read Georgia's new shelter order from the now infamous Gov. Kemp. Basically, it does nothing since there is an exception for everything.

But I think it's important to understand that this stuff did not *begin* with President Trump. This is the direction that the GOP has been heading for half a century: the demonization of The Other. Donald Trump was just smart enough to see it and to take it to its logical level

So it is genuinely not the greed of (some) Republicans, or the incompetence of the current administration, that bothers me the most; it's the meanspiritedness that has come to define so much of GOP policy and sentiment: wishing ill to other people. Sad.

I read it too. It's very vague.

And it supersedes any local ordinances that were more strict. So for some cities it will make things worse.

Agreed that Trump didn't start this but his rise to power and his administration has made it the most dominant influence in the Republican party. Irresponsibility permeates the party.

I think this also goes back to a long American history of distrust in science and experts. Ironic for the country known for its scientific and technological breakthroughs and world-class medical facilities. People are happy to reap the benefits, but distrust or disbelieve the warnings.

Republican leadership has stoked and then leveraged this sentiment for a long time to enrich big business at the expense of the commons. They've also created a narrative of science as being politically motivated, and then proven it by funding pseudo-science to create false-controversy over clearly established facts.

It got real for us here yesterday. A friend has passed away from the virus at age 49. Pretty healthy and fit guy. He showed symptoms 2 weeks ago, went to the hospital 2 days later before it got really bad, and his situation continued to deteriorate despite being on a ventilator. We are all shocked. By now everyone we know knows someone who has either died or gotten seriously ill. Trump’s daily circus press conference, joking around, patting himself on the back and enriching himself and friends in this process is so sickening I can’t watch it. Clearly some don’t understand the despair and tragedy inflicting people across the country.

There are not enough bodybags in the US to handle the coming 240,000 deaths estimated by Trump. The US military has about 100,000 body bags.

What about caskets? Forget that as an option.

How about burials? Mass burials, attended virtually, rather than one-at-time funerals.

I may be fired for saying this, but Little Rock, Arkansas has at least 7 major medical facilities and an Air Force Base with C-130s, fueled and sitting on the tarmac.

Would Cuomo please call Trump, and/or Trump call Governor Asa Hutchinson? We have only 12 deaths in the whole state!

in all fairness, maybe he just meant that he has been involved in models that involve real estate pro forma (not to be confused with pro quid pro, please), not in health care outcome models.
