To be re-elected, they have to win their primaries. They are keenly aware of the Tea Party types, who tend to drive the primaries; and the Tea Party came into being in large part as a response to the ACA. (Well, that--and having a man of color in the White House.)
Now, things change in ~10 years, and throwing red meat (e.g. getting rid of "Obamacare") to the TPers et al. is no longer a guarantee of winning the general election--and not even necessarily winning the primary! But old habits, including habits of thought, die hard, and many GOP pols continue to "dance with the one[s] who brung ya."
