i think it took a few weeks to "kick in," and i'll bet my nerves are still tempermental, but my scar tissue/surgery area is still much softer and looser than before the injections.

i highly recommend it before undergoing another surgery (or two?).

i have had too many docs tell me to leave my labral tear alone, and i am so glad i didn't get the surgery that one doc suggested.

on the road to recovery, feeling better each day, i think.

i feel that pretty soon i will not have the same tweaks. today i am wearing a belt for the first time in over 2.5 years, without bad pain. i see that as a huge step.

I'm sorry to post this without reading through the entire thread but I don't really feel like reading through all 46 pages. I am very seriously thinking of trying to contact Dr. Cattey, as I have been diagnosed with athletic pubalgia and I live within driving distance of Milwaukee. Does anyone know how to get an appointment with Cattey, and is it worth it to go to him or should I just try and go to Meyers.

I am a collegiate athlete and would like the shorter recovery with Cattey's procedure, but I also want it to be done properly. Thanks in advance for any responses.

Also, does anyone know what type of insurance Cattey accepts?

Paradigm: I saw Dr. Cattey in November, 2006, after having seen a local "sports physician" for nine months who advised me that my chronic groin pain was due to osteitis pubis and that I should "give up running" because I was too old (52)for that kind of activity. I live in Central Illinois and found Dr. Cattey's office address and phone number from his website, and scheduled an appointment with his assistant Annette. They were able to schedule me within 10 days. I visited his office in Milwaukee for a 90 minute consult with all of my charts and x-rays, and following his exam, he found that I did not suffer from athletic pubalgia/sports hernia/osteitis pubis, but instead, that I had prominent bilateral hernias that he could repair the next morning via laproscopic surgery. I underwent the procedure the next day and was discharged the day after. I have since resumed running, with the only complication being a bout with achilles tendonitis due to my impatience and my returning to racing and hard training without first building up my mileage base as I should. Almost all of my costs were covered by Blue Cross. I cannot thank Dr. Cattey and his staff enough for what they did for me. I was also advised by a prominent, world-class runner from our community that he was treated by Dr. Cattey after he had seen 3 other docs who couldn't do anything for him. I hurt my groin in a couple of soccer games in london back in Feb ... I rested for a couple of months and have maintained some level of fitness through the cross trainer with no pain and also lifting some light weights. However as soon as I jog more than 50 metres I break down and I also find it impossible to do any kind of ab work. I seen a physio (Former QPR physio) first and then a sports doctor (Arsenal FC) and they both mentioned sports heria but also wanted to investigate the condition of my hib. My hib is as you would expect for a 30 year old soccer player. I was then referred to Mr.Gilmore. I trust the opinion of the three guys as they have vast experience dealing with soccer players. My symptoms are consistent with a sports hernia and there is a physical test that all three reckons confirms this. I have decide to have the surgery. Has anyone had this surgery with Mr. Gilmore? I want to get it done asap. I have maintained good strength in the surrounding muscles and am in good condition. I am however worried about possible nerve damage etc. Is there any particular excerises I should be doing before the? operation? I realise from recent threads there are people in worse nik than myself but I see this as the best way to proceed having already cost me 7 months (almost a year by the time I am up and running). Has anyone had the operation with Mr. Gilmore or in the London UK area?

What a discussion. I have read all 46 pages. I think this is the ultimate source of information about AP, SH, or GG anywhere.

I am not a runner. It may be important for some to hear my story. I play golf. I am 57 years old. I am out of shape.

A week ago, I came running down a hill after looking for an errant tee shot. Rather than sitting down and sliding on my arse I chose to make a desperate leap of 1.5 meters to the flat ground. Apparently most of my 92 kilos was absorbed by my left leg and the shock was then sent to my inguinal ligament. It felt like a gunshot to my lower left abdomen. At first I was happy I didn't break a leg. I dusted myself off and decided to play on. Wrong...my backswing felt fine but the downswing crumpled me to the ground in agony. I drove myself to the doctor. No hernia was found. They told me to rest. Gave me some pills. I did rest but that wasn't easy the first 2 days because one must change positions while lying prone. Doesn't one? I have the typical problem of turning over in bed and getting in and out of a car. My worst problem is that I can't swing a golf club. At least not left-handed the way I learned 40 years ago.

It has been 8 days since the accident. I remember to pull my left leg into the car and into bed using my hands. Doing this...I am pain free. But, I want to play golf again. Today, I tried to play right-handed and so far have no ill effects. (except for the score). What I am thinking is a non-athelete could possibly live with this problem if he were to make some adjustments in his life. So at this point, I will opt for not getting surgery. I mean, the surgery sounds fairly debilitating in itself, doesn't it?

I am curious, did you runners develope your injury over time or do you remember the moment you damaged yourself?

My injury was developed over time, so yours may just take a few weeks or even a month or more to heal. As for the surgery, if they do it laproscopically it is not debillatationg at all, in fact most people are walking around the smae day, and back tobiking and stuff within a week or two.

Thank you Johnny and all for the scar tissue remediation treatments. I cannot find an OS here in santa barbara that can help. Last weekend I had a major knee flare up on my opposite side of my 2 year old AP surgery site. This weeks MRI of the left knee shows a bone bump form an old injury. Most likely that time i got hit 8 years ago, on my bike impact from a car fender. Anyway the surgeon/Dr. says to try to take weight off of it. I am lined up for Femor shaving and labrum trim on the leftside as well. I wrote to Dr. Guanche about being able to PT after the leftside procedure right now AI can only walk my dog slowly for a half mile. Still very hopefull I can get some physicality back. I have not missed work but most forms of exercise are hurtful.

As stated in my previuos thread. Dr. Meyers and Dr. Guanche are collaborating on the association of FAI and AP. I did alot of PT this summer and had only a few hours here and there of athletic exercise. When I saw Myers in July I thought he would have dealt with my surgery side but after looking at my MRI he wanted to pursue in Philly my newly discovered FAI. He, and a month later, UCLA dr. difiori checked my pelvic floor the post SH side and the leftside groin pain. They did not say it was loose. resisted situp no problem and range of motion 30% less on my left / FAI side. On my right / AP side that canal palpitation during my UCLA examination inflamed my nerve(s) majorly for 3 to 4 days. That nerve is either predisposed to this or maybe caught in the scar tissue. Itr seems my smooth muscles aroun=d the SH site were not given the proper therapy post surgery for the large pelvic floor reattachment(permanent sutures). I like what I heard about Meyers tellin his patients to work it. My surgeon never set me up with a PT regimen although I have called him every 6 months about my tightness and subsequent pain. He fixed my pelvic floor but it is very tight hard tio sit upright which pulls on the sacroilliac and rotates the pelvis. Well Im going to go downtown to see a jazz concert. Hope everyone is doin better!

Can anyone let me know what kind of pain/tightness/soreness they experienced post surgery for sports hernia or hip arthroscopy? Has anyone experienced the same type of issues they had pre-surgery and then with time and rehab recovered fully from such?

I was glad to read in your update that you seem to be over the hump. We need a few success stories on this thread, becuase most of us are still here because we still have problems. AS some may remember, I was one of the few who Meyers did not recommend surgery, and instead gave me an excercise program and an anti inflammatory med. I was doing great for awhile, but reinjured mjyself on my first tough five-mile run (4 1/2 had been OK) three months ago and things haven't improved since then. So, I'm headed back to Meyers and ready to go under the knife if he wants to do it. I have some questions for any of you out there who have been through this:

1. First-what were your symptoms before surgery? I had pain only centered just above the pubic bone for nine months, but now it seems to move around from there to one adductor, occasionally the other, and sometimes in whatever bone is right on the bottom of my groin, as if something was stuck up inside through it. Now I'm afraid he'll want to do the adductor release.

2. Philadelphia is four hours away from me. Do any of you have had had surgery with Meyer's think I could drive myself home the next day? I doubt it, but it would be alot easier than any other option.

3. I am a custom home builder, which is probalby one reason I keep this thing irritated even when I don't run. (Soccer is what initially started it though) I can get away without lifting, but do need to get back on my feet ASAP, which includes up and down stairs alot. What was your condition after a week? I really need to be able to spend several hours a day walking around to keep my project moving forward. (normally it's about nine hours-I'll be happy with 4 by the second week, but I'm afraid that's way tpoo optomistic.)

I'm an old guy-56 now. I don't expect to be pain free, but I'll be happy if after surgery Meyers can tell me that I'm not doing any harm when I do stuff. I can give up soccer, but right now working, running, kayaking, lifting and even hiking all cause this to flare right up.

go to germany dude. They showed me on ultrasound the injury in 1 minute... I had three in north america and no one could even see it. I had bi lateral SH surgery in munich last week and i'm already sure i made the right choice

Some paitient's on this thread have reported that MRI's , CT scans, and xrays haven't shown hernias. I assumed that ultrasound is low tech compared to those and yet Dr. Mu in Germany consistently locates the problem. Sounds like she is the best having read this 46 page thread.

went to germany 5 days ago - what were your symptoms and have they started to improve already ?

I'm still sore from the surgery but with the SH fixed I should be good soon. Symptoms are the standard lower ab, adductor, pelvic, SI aching pain etc.

I saw Meyers for surgery on April 11th. I'll answer your questions best I can.

1. Symptoms before surgery: pain in testicals, pain on both sides, near and on pubis bone, pain that radiated down aductors and sometimes upward along the rectus abdominis muscle.

2. Do not attempt to drive the next day. I took a flight and while percoset helped, I couldn't imagine trying to drive myself, let alone trying to drive the week after. You'll want to get someone to drive you or better yet, take a train. You'll just have to trust me on this...Meyers does 15 of these surgeries in one day - I don't think he's gentle as Dr. Um seems to be in Munich. I was in bad pain for at least 1.5 weeks and even at 2 weeks driving was uncomfortable.

3. After a week...you won't be getting very far...and while he recommends going up stairs as a form of prelim rehab, don't be fooled into thinking you'll glide up the steps. Everything takes a LONG TIME to do, walking, getting up, taking a shower, etc.

4. You'll definitely get better, but at your age, I would HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend you consider going to Munich...I'm 6 months out and one side is perfect, the other is STILL somewhat erratically painful. Gentle is the word many use in talking about Dr. Um and I'd really think about that if I were you. I almost regretted seeing Meyers until I started to make micro improvements. I played a bit of tennis the other day and wasn't sore, but it took me 6 mos to get there. They say the recovery time with Dr. Um is fairly short...although, everyone is different. I'd at least email them to discuss where you are currently, to see if it's a good fit.

Please let us all know if you have more questions; we could probably all write volumes.

hey just wondering, regarding fai and sh combos...

i see that meyers relates the two often. i wonder how many soccer players out there that had successful sh surgeries also needed fai surgeries?

if they are so related as meyers claims, then why are there so many high caliber athletes returning to sports with no problems after surgery, especially with dr muschaweck?

i wonder if lingering pain is most commonly due to scar tissue buildup. it seems to me that most of the people who still have postop issues had the injury a long time, long enough to continue microtearing thus heavy scar tissue buildup. that scar tissue can irritate and/or entrap nerve endings. that equals tugging of tissues and pain.

I remember Dr. Meyers reading my dyed MRI report from UCLA taken last June. It states labrum tears posterior- FAI etc...

I also read another report from cadavers with a very high incidence of tears from normal wear and tear.

FAI also has an angle issue of the hip bone femor. People with FAI usually cannot sit on the floor cross legged and move thier hips / legs around.

I am going to my FAI surgeon and among many questions I am going to ask him: How these two, SH and FAI, are related.

FAI surgery with a UCLA report shows a 80% success rate for bone shaving and labrum trimming. Some sites say that labrum repairing (with sutures) is what can cause complications. Not doing this procedure will lead to arthritus and then a fake hip.

I am convinced that my leftside groin pain is not another sheared inguinal floor. It is the refferred FAI pain that started after favoring my SH side for 13 months with hot pain-undiagnosed. Gettin out of the car , driving, lifting the bad sides leg, walking etc...The good side had to take up the slack from the unstable, torn SH side. I am not sure if this FAI was caused by this favoring or just happen coincidently. It really became evident straddling my 24" wide surf board last winter. The hip angle along with the labral tear(s) caused big pain . Have not surfed since April.

I wish Meyers would give his take on the relationship. If people with the bad angle are predisposed or which comes first.

Dr Muchaweck will be seeing Michael Owen on thursday and maybe for surgery on friday. There is tons of press coverage about his groin injury/hernia. Sky news has been talking about it all week. If you google search Owen and Muschaweck you can find dozens of articles and follow along and see just how fast he gets back to playing .The English national team wants him playing in two weeks for qualifiers with Russia and Estonia. He specifically asked for her to do the surgery rather then staying in England.
