I'm starting to wonder if breakthrough cases are as rare as they say. Governor Abbott has a breakthrough case. Senators Wicker and King have breakthrough cases. And today I find out that a friend of mine is recovering from a breakthrough case.
Of course, the data on severity of illness is very solid. Almost all hospitalizations and deaths are coming from the unvaccinated.
But I'm starting to think Delta is so contagious that a lot more infections than we know are happening among the vaccinated population. I haven't seen any recent data on that and I'm not sure if even the experts have a good feel for it at the moment. But it's something to watch out for.

I acknowledged that Biden's presence in the White House was more about him not being Trump and less about him actually being the man for the job. And I agree that he's done a lousy job with this, bringing into question his ability to lead.
But come on man. Do better when you post.
No, you disqualified yourself when you stated that "Biden has absolutely did a better job than Trump..." You are just as bad as the rest of LR libs/NeverTrumpers. Do better.
Again, ANY AMERICAN - like you - who argues that an autocrat is better than ANYONE who ISN'T an autocrat (but whom they simply think is simply "incompetent") doesn't deserve their Social Security Number.
And I know that you folks are utterly impervious to logic (and honesty), but what the hell, it's kind of fun thinking how you'd struggle to communicate something to a primate. So here goes (say it slowly):
In a DE-MOC-RA-CY, your average autocrat is INFINITELY worse than your average incompetent.
And if you can't manage to understand this, the Founding Fathers would REALLY appreciate it if you would stop voting (and speaking publicly....or even at the table at Thanksgiving).

Biden has been acting like a power hungry dictator since the day he took office. Mandating masks, pressuring the DOJ to force vaccines, Biden has signed far more EOs than Trump, etc. Our POTUS is an absolute disaster.

The continued fallout is sad, and a nasty stain for America. Again, removing troops was the right thing to do. How this has been handled and the fallout since has proven the execution of said removal has been poor.
This seems to be the common refrain. Yet no one seems to be able to describe how to better exit a country under civil war, with a national army who threw down their weapons and refused to fight. Add to that thousands of American citizens who apparently didn't see the news and realize this was a very real possibility, as it was happening all over the country.
I agree it's black eye for the USA. I'm just not seeing how this scenario plays out any differently. If the ANA refused to provide security for Kabul, then there was always going to be a point where whatever USA forces were left were choppering out or getting on planes at the airport. Even if we had more troops in the city to hold it, which would be tens of thousands, those would still have to retreat to a stronghold and leave from there.
The only way I see this having gone better is if the ANA had actually stood up and tried to hold Kabul, allowing the US forces a more graceful exit. Perhaps that was never in the cards.
Good points. Refreshing to see some nuance. And while I do suspect that there wasn't enough concern/action - at the highest levels - about getting Afghan allies out, the only other scenario I can imagine that could have substantially avoided this would have been for the U.S. to execute a wholesale evacuation of U.S. citizens and Afghan allies (and moving the embassy to the airport) BEFORE things really started to go to hell. That probably would have been best for us, at least from an evacuation standpoint. BUT, it's GUARANTEED that when the country fell that fast - and perhaps EVEN faster? - we would have been fully blamed (and arguably justifiably) for having helped accelerate it through our demonstrated lack of confidence in the Afghan government/forces.
I'm no professional planner (although I am retired military, multiple tours in AFG), but I think that those were likely the two main choices. Neither great.

I agree. In the past week I've heard of 3 vaccinated people I know who tested positive after hearing none since April. The one who is pregnant is the only one with symptoms. Here is my thinking:
1) Pfizer/Moderna vaccines do Phase 3 trials in the USA last summer/fall when most people (or at least the type of people who participate in experimental vaccine trials) are avoiding lots of indoor contact with others and also when delta was largely not present in the USA. Behaviors were not consistent with "typical" behavior.
2) After lots of people get vaccinated, delta is more widespread in the country and vaccinated people are being MUCH more lax in their behavior- maskless indoors with other group, big indoor events, etc.
3) Based on public health messaging, if you are vaccinated you are highly unlikely to "get covid". This leads people to assume a very low likelihood of testing positive should they get tested. Hence, no reason to get tested except for routine testing for work/travel.
4) The vaccines are working as advertised and drastically reducing the chance of hospitalization/death. Along with this, there is a reduction in the severity of symptoms. Given that coronavirus infection only leads to significant symptoms in a percentage of cases (maybe half?) in the first place, I suspect that quite a few vaccinated people have asymptomatic cases and are never tested to prove so. The three people that I know with recent positive tests all came from routine testing at their jobs.

Breakthrough cases are more likely the more someone exposes themselves to infected people. If the odds are 99% you won't get a breakout infection when you are in an infected crowd. And you do that 10 times the odds of catching something are 0.99^10, less than 90%. For 100x times (.99^100) exposing yourself your odds drop to less than 40%.

The breakout cases are due to repeated exposure to infected groups of people.

It's funny, because in some ways were kind of are as dumb as you suggest. Because we SOMEHOW think that folks like you aren't QUITE as dumb as you appear. Despite you proving it OVER and OVER again. Hope springs eternal, I guess.
You just called someone a dictator because:
- They supported/imposed mask mandates during a pandemic (despite the fact that you happily follow hundreds of less important and more intrusive laws/directives on an daily basis).
- And signed fully legal Executive Orders.
And, I guess, you suggested that Biden has abused the Rule of Law one-one billionth as much as his predecessor.
About your quibbling with the word "democracy," I suppose that you CAN demonstrate that autocrats are considered A-OK in a "constitutional republic"? Good to know.
Really, you just need to turn off your computer.

+1 but after their tripling down on stupid after the election I gave up on these deplorables for good. They are as dumb and sometimes even dumber than they seem and need to be called out so others are hopefully too embarrassed to take their side. Racists and I American dictator lovers need to stay hidden the fk away. And as much as some like to claim they are not emotionally invested they go all out conspiracy theorist and autocrat loving when there is a chance to defend their orange hero or blast the other guy.
In short, they are irretrievably lost. Using the posts above for example, Gary literally makes some $hit up and pretends it’s a fact, and no matter what you tell him he won’t bend. They are fkn lost and we can only hope they breed less and have diminished power as a minority demographic group.

Car model? Wrong poster. But even if I was, you of course have no substantive response. You could try one. But you'd fail. And then go find some more cute memes to send. Impressive. But really, give it a try: Why is someone who says to wear masks during a pandemic a dictator? Go ahead.

Like others, I gather, one goes a few days, maybe even a few weeks, realizing that it's not worth ANY effort.....and then you're weak and stupid again! Kudos to those who are stronger!!
However, I can also relate to your more aggressive stance. With Trumpism, of course, we're no longer talking about mere policy differences. On most or all of those, the average citizen could make a good case for not trying to change minds. As in, "Hey, I'm not going to change anyone's mind on issue X, so I'm not going to try." And fortunately, America won't fundamentally change, either way.
But, when we're talking about Trumpism and truly the soul of a nation, maybe it's different. They DO need to be confronted. Not to change their minds, but to make it clear that they won't be tolerated. And so many of them ARE the Neanderthal types who see self-restraint and decency as weakness, and that emboldens them. The average a****** in his pickup with a Trump flag ASSUMES that he's intimidating people. Unfortunately, in many cases he probably is. And while that may not affect the ballot box (one can hope), it's still enraging and massively disappointing.
