The ultimate test of voter support and national moral will be whether Trump is allowed to be above the law or not. If in doing his job, Mueller requires access to Trump and family finances, then politicians, media and the public are going to weigh in on whether Trump should be shielded from that or not. Think about it, that we might even be debating Mueller's powers is already beyond absurd. BUT it is the new world order so everything is possible.

^This. No presidential candidate in modern history has refused to release their tax returns. Yet, Trump has not only refused but now threatened the special prosecutor that his family finances are "a red line".

Who says that if they aren't hiding something? I am not a dem or a lib, I voted for Gary Johnson and would've never voted for Clinton. But, I do think we need laws (a constitutional amendment hopefully) requiring all executive branch members, legislative branch members, and judicial branch members of government to release their taxes prior to election or appointment.
How can anyone thinking rationally disagree with a policy like that? I fully understand that people could and would still make shady financial deals / break laws / etc. if such a rule was in place but we need transparency--as much of it as we can get--from our government officials. Why are so many people opposed to such rules? There is something rotten in Trump's finances, it may have nothing to do with Russia but he is clearly hiding something, which is not right.

At the school of infantry I got to know a transgender Marine that had much more balls than you and all your alpha male friends combined. She volunteered to protect your country and more than proved herself in the field and theater. She would easily bash your face in and I would have taken her in my squad any day over most of the "men". So STFU unless you know what you're talking about.

This is, of course, exactly why Trump did this. His supporters genuinely hate transgendered people. Gotta keep tossing the meatheads some scraps or they'll eventually turn on you.

These are the questions Republicans consider when taking policy action:

1. Will this policy have a negative financial impact on our corporate donors?

2. Will this policy piss off liberals?

3. Will this policy rally the base?

4. Do we risk losing our jobs by passing/not passing this?

Questions like, "is there evidence that this policy will be effective?" or "does this policy address a legitimate problem?", entirely miss the point and are no longer considered.

This is also why Leftists simply do not relate to the general people outside the echochambers. In many cases, Leftists truly do inhabit mediated realities in order to maintain the denial mechanism.
The denial mechanism in Leftists is probably the most alarming. As this denial mechanism becomes more dysfunctional, Leftists become extremely vociferous and volatile. Although in small numbers they are easily manageable, in larger populations, Leftists can pose a considerable threat (simply due to irrationality). They may attack unexpectedly, employing tactics such as ambush and cornering to intimidate the single, most immediate adversary. In all cases, Leftists will claim their provocations are warranted. They will cite mediated reality. Largely discredited, highly co-opted media reality. They will deny any wrongdoing.
When Leftists deny, they deny with all their power. Again, this is possibly the most significant symptom of the disease. Leftists deny unconsciously. In most cases, they have developed comorbid coping mechanisms. In all cases, said mechanisms are highly maladaptive. Leftists will deny anything outside their mediated reality, even in the face of incontrovertible evidence to the contrary. Despite real-world events. I don't know about that. Based on the explanations that SECDEF and POTUS have given, I think the Pentagon told Trump that working out the details of this plan would take resources and money. He doesn't like the military's money being used for things besides fighting and proving how strong the country is, so he axed the plan.

His actions are also consistent with someone who has nothing to hide but who does have serious god delusions and considers it offensive that mere ants dare to investigate him.

I don't give any credence to the explanations of a serial liar. The cost is minute and the military directs resources and money to all sorts of things that are not about fighting or showing strength. This is about being mean to trannies as part of Bannon's "culture war", nothing more. Check out the front page of Breitbart and then sift through the comments. This stuff makes the base positively giddy (and, in more than a few cases, I assume, a bit tingly in the nether regions).

I don't consider Gen. Mattis to be a serial liar, though granted, his explanation was slightly different from Trump's. And I should have been more clear- I don't think the plan would have cost any more money/resources than many of the other non-fighting things that the military does, but I could see a situation where the Pentagon tells Trump, "It will take $2m (a number I made up) to implement this" and he says, "we could be spending that money on machine guns!"

You are correct. That's why I began my comment with "Possibly."

It's true that there is a lot we don't know.

I do think there is plenty of evidence that Trump does not have a god delusion. To me, it looks like just the opposite. Trump seems to be very insecure and in desperate need of affirmation and adulation. Someone who considers themselves to be extremely powerful does not crave such things.

I found it interesting that Trump seemed to go deeper off the wall when it was revealed that Mueller would be looking into his finances. Whether or not that reveals Trump is beholden to Russia in a significant financial way or not, I think Trump is far more concerned that the truth of his worth is far less than what he has put out there publicly.

In the grand scheme of things, this may not or should not matter (his net worth). But to him it is a big deal and thus an irrational reaction to any revelation of the truth.
