114 - of which 55 were in Washington.
So about 50 were in the other 49 states.
California has a population of 35 million - 13 deaths.
Texas has a population of 21 million - 2 deaths.
We are likely talking about 15 people who were likely pretty old and could have died from other causes.
Again, 50 deaths in 49 states. Last year in ALL of America - we had 80,000 deaths. And we are freaking out over 50 deaths in 49 states. 50 versus 80,000? Doesn't this seem crazy to you?

We've been over this. So, i will let you figure out the math on your own. What % are the cases and deaths going up each day? Extrapolate this out for 2 months? Now since even the experts dont know how this virus will react to the summer heat...Extrapolate the numbers out for 6mo-12mo?
The issue isnt the current cases or deaths. The issue is the future cases or deaths and the uncertainty.

You are so focused on the # of deaths attributed to CV.
And it is a pandemic because it is wide spread and not concentrated in one area. There is no safe state to go to.
The issue is the hospitals, doctors and medical centers are under strain right now.
They have been near capacity before this and now there is more of a strain with people infected or even thinking they may be infected and going to get looked at.
You don't need people dying all over the place to see the system is strained and can't handle more.
That's the reason for the shutdowns.
You can argue the death rate is small all day long, but realize the situation we're in and what we have to face going forward.
Most things have only been closed for tow days and feels like a month.
It's going to stretch out for a long time and the worldwide pain is going to be bad.
Trump is doing better right now at messaging, I'll admit.
But there is a rough road ahead.

I just got off my weekly conference call with coworkers in Beijing. Since they are several weeks ahead of us, you might be interested in knowing what things are like in China right now:
* Everyone is still working from home. The office remains closed.
* A few restaurants have reopened, some with a limited menu.
* There is plenty of food in the stores but prices are a little higher.
* You can go out whenever you want. They encouraged me to make sure to get out of the house to stay sane.
* When returning they have to show proof that they live in the community. They also get their temperature checked at that time.
* You get a mini health screen wherever you go.
* They think it will still be a couple of months before things go back to normal.

the layoffs and business closings are going to really hurt - so many americans live paycheck to paycheck and millions are going to lose their paychecks, starting now. It's going to be pretty bad.

Sure, but those cancellations are going to extend out and build.
Then those cancellations will meet the burden of the anxiety you mentioned.
People that make money serving people (which is a large number) have no income every single day.
If you are a cook or a waiter, you are losing money daily.
If you work in a mall, you are losing money daily.
Etc. Etc.
I'm curious why there don't seem to be any stories about the flatlining for several days of Italian new cases and deaths. Is that a wrong way to look at the data? Or are journos not comfortable putting anything comforting in their stories?
Also, Iran has had multiple days of flatlined new cases. Deaths continue to rise though.
