The CDC is the major fault. They screwed up the testing rollout from day one.

Is that trump's fault? Not clear.

This CDC guy, from the obama era, does think the trump admin bears some blame.

"Thomas Frieden, an infectious disease physician who served as CDC director under former president Barack Obama, called on Sunday for an “independent group” to investigate what went wrong with the CDC’s testing process. He said in the past, the CDC moved quickly to produce tests for diseases such as H1N1, or swine flu.

“We were able to get test kits out fast,” Frieden said on CNN. “Something went wrong here. We have to find out why so we can prevent that in the future.”

Frieden said the agency has been muzzled under President Trump and despite the multitude of problems with the rollout of testing, “the CDC is still the greatest public health institution in the world.”"

Sorry, agip, trump fired the pandemic team; he refused the WHO tests; he continued to interfere; he refuses to resign.

It all comes down to when Tiny fired the pandemic response team.

A competent president would recognize that the pandemic response team was needed to prepare for and head off the next pandemic.

A competent president would have listened to his pandemic response team and understood what was happening three months ago.

A competent president would have seen that the CDC was failing and rushed to find an alternative test.

A competent president would already be building temporary hospitals.

A competent president would have people figuring out how to procure vital medical supplies that will soon run low.

A competent president would be executing a comprehensive plan to battle the virus.

A competent president would be helped in taking the above actions and more by his pandemic response team. But he fired them. And when the pandemic came, he refused to listen to the experts. Or more likely, the experts were silenced because Tiny does not tolerate messengers with bad news.

That's why Tiny is responsible for the testing failures and all these other failures.

that's a key question - would a competent president have stepped in that fast? How is a president supposed to understand a critical 3 day period was being missed on testing? Serious question. Given the CDC's solid record in the past, a president nosing into its business after just 3 days might be an unreasonable ask. You could argue a competent president would step back and not interfere with experts/qualified scientists.

I'm not sure Obama or Carter or anyone would have been quick on the switch either.

It's the president's job to nose into their business. Someone from the pandemic response team would have been embedded with the CDC and closely tracking their progress. If the pandemic response team was up and running, they would have recognized how critical the test was to the success of their overall plan. They would have been working with the WHO to be ready to use their test in order to have redundancy in case the CDC failed.

In other words, a competent president would have competent people doing a competent job.

Still calling it a hoax until a week ago...

Trump can get re-elected if he steps up and leads us out of a potential health and economic disaster.

If he gets Nancy Mitch in a room and the 3 of them hammer out a deal to close down the right amount of public gatherings and get money right into the hands of the people that will lose work from this so they don't miss a meal or a bill, he can get credit and be re-elected if the economy is growing in October.

He also has to step up and admit to his missteps and bring people together.

As you demonstrate with your strange use of capitals, maybe the language is a little out of your reach.

Anyway, I read an interesting idea - that bernie needs a way to drop out, yet save face and not disillusion too many kids.

He can use the virus - he could just say 'look, I don't want to encourage anybody to go vote in a crowded, dangerous place.' and drop out.

Which has the benefit of being true.

You are not right. Firing the US Pandemic Response Team was huge. Oh, and Obama created that team. Trump has gotten in the way here by initially being the spokesperson about this virus, which he got completely wrong. He didn't set the proper tone, so more people than should have went about their daily lives like they had been doing instead of being extra cautious. You may not hang on the word of any president, but 40% of this country believes anything Trump says. Trump has also set a tone for all governmental agencies that if you go against what he says that you are likely going to be out of a job. Not good for anyone, not the NIH, not the CDC, not anyone. Trump was, at a minimum, three weeks behind in seeking help from private companies to get more tests created and delivered. He made himself and then Mike Pence of all people, the point people here, and that is ridiculous. Should have been Fauci and other experts right from the beginning.

Have there been other problems too that not even a partisan Trump hater can point to? Yes. One of the chemicals in the initial roll out of tests wasn't working properly, so there were too many inconclusive tests. That is not Trump's fault. Almost everything else is though. He is still even today saying things that aren't true about this virus.
