I had heard of chris Bradshaw when he first came to England to assist on a Obturator surgery of a famous rugby star. I am about as far away as I could get, being in Seattle. I once almost went to him when he was back in Auckland during the three years that I was believing that I had Obturator problems. I had had several MRI's that were negative and 5 hernia specialists all denied that I had a hernia. Chris and I conversed through email a few times. I was still milling around hoping a local dr would help me and the idea of travelingto England seemed crazy. No doctor here had even heard of Obtutator neuropathy except the chiropractor that thought I had it. DR Bradshaw probably remembers me , I sent him some wild photos of me getting hurt while on stage at a drunken wedding reception. I wish he was miles from me. He is on my short list of Worlds best doctors.

The procedure is open but very non invasive. She pulls muscle out of the way rather then cutting it.I was up and walking in 2 hours. The key is her being so careful. I asked her to cut my nerve but she found what was causing the problem and moved what was rubbing on it. We discussed all of the options the night before surgery.I told her my concerns with mesh and patches and about the nerve damage that I thought I had . She listened and assured me that she rarely uses mesh and that she tries to not cut or damage nerves. I was afraid because of being fifty that she might not use the minimal technique on me but she did. Let me tell you I was blown away when finally someone figured out what was going on.Again its the way they examine you that is different.

I've been keeping tabs on this thread for a year or so - it really is the best source of info on SH/GG on the web!

Jerry Gilmore - the Gilmore in Gilmore's Groin, has a practice in Harley Street London. I went to see him and he was excellent - in the end I chose not to have the op so can't comment on his work personally, but he's done Jonny Wilkinson and Alan Shearer among many others, so can't be too bad!

In general, I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned Gilmore much - he's in a great location, is obviously very experienced and certainly among the best at this in the world. Here's the link:

thanks - i will look at gilmore's site, i have thought about him but i really want something minimally invasive and GENTLE as nerve damage is my major fear.

As i understand it Alan Shearer actually went to Munich but i am open to correction.

Jon - what is the reason you chose not to have the op in the end ? What were your symptoms.

How is your neural therapy going? Any improvements?

I had two sessions of neural therapy myself, and what's amazing is both the cosmetic and scar tissue change.

The scar tissue was very thick and nodular before treatment, yet after one session it felt completely different. Too, the scar itself looks much better.

I have a good feeling about this type of treatment.

It would be great to know how many sessions your doctor is recommending and if treatments have provided any noticeable difference.

i had one treatment a week ago where my incisional scars, just above the pubic bone, and 4 scars around my left knee all got shot up and the tissues manually worked.

i felt immediate releif but two days later i went swimming then rode my bike and had a big flare up. i didn't know i was supposed to take it easy for 4-5 days after.

i had already had my scars worked on a bunch via a pt then eventually the sturctural integration/rolf practitioner(s).

but i think that this osteopath's manipulations (scar breakdown + lumbar manipulation)combined with the NT injections are very effective, i wish i had known about this stuff earlier.

i do feel a bit better today. there was massive scar tissue buildup down there. the d.o. thinks that i probably tore my rectus fascia along the edge, he injected a trigger pt there as well. before my injury i had very strong abdominals and despite my pains, my pt said to do deep stretches and crunches, which i did- but i am sure that increased the amount of scarring in there.

i see the doctor in 2 more weeks and am very excited since i don't think he is going to beat up my scars much more and i know those shots are good for the prolem. the doc says i might only need two more sessions.

my scar patches are also much softer and looser. and that painful little nodule just off the inguinal ligament is much smaller and less painful.

i also have been working on a blog that will hopefully help people who are in pain due to sports hernia injuries. who knows how many non-runners have sports hernias but never find this letsrun site and this great forum thread? i was never a runner- i only ran when chased, and i consider myself lucky to have found the thread over a year ago.

i hope others can post comments on it. i haven't really been updating it much and i never really proofread anything, just sort of type off the cuff, but i hope it offers help to some people.

i don't think NT is homeopathic - it is considered "natural"- but is often mixed with homeopathic remedies in europe and canada. of course, not in the usa.

my symptoms now are, pain along the path of the nerves irritated in the injury. docs say that i suffered nerve damage, probably from all the scarring.

pain off the inguinal ligament, corners of pubic bone, inside left groin/adductor area, and sit bone/base of penis area. all those spots correspond with the nerve paths.

i get pain with overdoing things, bending isn't all that great, and often lifting is impossible but then again i was very deconditioned before my surgery since i lost so much weight.

and search for iliohypogastric nerve (or maybe pelvic nerves) and you can get a good idea of the nerve pathways. when um does the surgery she injects right into these nerves because they will feel the pain otherwise. these same nerves are often indicated neuropathies post-hernia ops.

but um is the queen of the hernia castle, and she stays away from these nerves.

in my case, i beleive, i had torn up my aperneurosis really good and it was not tended to, only allowed to scar after each microtear took place, which in case irritated the iliohypogastric and ilioinguinal nerves.

Now, about 11 days out from the operation, I'm disheartened to report that I feel no discernable change. My right adductor tendon/muscle is still painful and badly torn, and I still can't walk without the greatest discomfort. Perhaps I'm just too eager for results, but after 6 months of frustration I had hoped the mesh would give me at least some reason to feel optimistic.

Instant anatomy is great...I'm going to bring some of the pages in to my chiro so I can learn even more about it.

Sounds like your doc is making headway with you...and you sound positive despite the length of time you've been less than 100%.

Since I also had prolotherapy at one point before seeing Meyers for the surgery, I think that neural therapy is a great follow up to surgery. Johnny, at 10 mos post op (is that where you are?), your scar tissue should be in a much better place and NT is going to totally help. It has for me in less than a week.

There is also another type of therapy called Platelet Therapy or Platelet Concentration. They draw blood, separate out the platelets, mix them with vitamins and inject them back into the problem area. I've heard that it's the next step if neural therapy doesn't work...your body likes to use it's own material to regenerate. Here's a website I found:

my pains were there before and after, but much worse before. i think i had pretty extensive tearing of the rectus and aponeurosis taht never got tended to so there is extra scar= extra nerve irritation. not to mention i was doing the wrong protocol(s) before and after the surgery, most likely.

i am 13 months post op and am fathoms ahead of where i was before surgery. i actually was worse than ever about 1 year before surgery, which was 6 months after my big sh blowout. so there has been steady improvement since that point on, but i would have never gotten past a state of pretty constant pain had i not gone to munich.

joe, thanks for the info. yes, my scars are softer, meaning incisional and all the sclerotic, scarred up tissue around the abdomen and groin. still getting zaps of pain here and there, but overall getting better. i cannot wait for more nt. ifn' it doesn't work, then i will check out what you suggested.

What's even more interesting is the Munich doc Sher suggested...he uses the red tufts on the top of roosters heads, turns it into a liquid after extracting the beneficial parts and injects it into the affected area. He's worked on a ton of famous athletes in Europe with a high degree of success. Something like 17 needles at once in various places...

Add those travel expenses to our national health plan tab...

hey johnny, i am feeling much much better. I can walk long distance, I do light ab exercise and strengthening the back muscles. I still have a long way to go because my pelvis has shifted and it will take time to get it back to its original position. I am lucky i was able to stay in munich longer and get expert advice of what to do and what not to do. Hope you are also on your way to recovery and if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Well I went to Dr. DiFiori @ UCLA to get a second opinion for labral repair and femoral shaving. A couple of interesting developments. I showed my Philadelphia MRI perscription from Dr. Meyers to Dr. Carlos Guanche ( he has done UCLA basketball player Ship as well as Barry Manilow). Dr. Guanche not only knew about Meyers but is currently writing a paper about the coexisting injuries: LAbrum tears and Sports hernias. I am going to have my leftside done 10-3-2007. I have alot of groin pain after exertion but none when I am a couch potato. Dr. Guanche was the first DR. to understand my bodies adopted, leaned-back sitting position. I hope this outpatient surgery will be straight forward. He said out of work a week.

I still have some major pain on my 22month out, repaired pelvic floor. Dr. DiFiori said I should have it looked at at the same time as my labrum surgery. He acknowledged Dr. Guanche for the work. I told him I went to Meyers for corrective hernia surgery again. He then checked me. He pressed hard, into both sides of my inguinal canal openings , feeling for looseness while having me do situps. He did not note any problems but my surgery side really flared up for the last 3 days. This exam illicted some strong nerve pain. I need to Get this corrected as well.
