The Saudis are in control today because they can produce a virtually limitless supply at a much lower cost. They have the power to put US production out of business any time they want. They don't do it because of other geopolitical concerns. For instance, they want us to fight wars for them. And that's what we do because we are their slaves.

Fracking is highly leveraged and deep in debt. Once several of those companies crash and default the lenders won't be as willing to pony up more cash so they can reboot the process.

Trump is panicking, and he’ll bring many down with him.

At best the predictive power isn't known yet... the trend over time is a flawed metric in this case because no election is alike. In 2016 we had a very unpopular candidate running against Trump. The GOP primary turnout was unreal. The turnout for Bernie was unreal. I cannot look at that and say it's possible it had zero effect on the general election outcome given the usual R/Dem split. We have likely an even more hated candidate in trump for 2020. The Dem turnout has been higher (which is saying a lot for a second term election), and the vote is more concentrated on one individual than in 2016...There is no way that somehow hurts democrats, so I am concluding it is going to help them at least a bit. Unless you are telling me that all these people voting for Biden are going to stay home in Nov...

The reality is those oil-rich rocks aren't going to disappear and neither is the ever improving fracking tech. Shale isn't going to die. It is a young industry and is taking a massive beating now because of the helicopter money that fed the reckless strategies of increasing production even as prices continued to fall. Some may go BK now and production is sure to drop as they get starved out of cash. But rest assured it is not going away and is going to remain a big force in the global supply/demand balance.

I'm not so sure that $30 oil means that we turn away from oil. Amurricans will just upgrade to the next larger truck size because you know dumbashes.

This will bring down natual gas prices too, which is good I suppose...less coal will be used in power plants.

What the US shoudl do is say 'oil will always be $60 a barrel and we will tax it until it is.' then green industries can survive.

Saudi's can produce at lowest cost but their budget requires a higher oil price than those of other nations including Russia. This is what is causing the friction. They are fighting over the strategy to curb shale. Russia has just told everyone they have had enough of the slow bleed method and now prefer to just flood the market and put significant pressure on frackers. Price destruction will force shale to slow down significantly, but it's been hurting OPEC big time.

The mindset of deregulation actually hurts the US shale businesses. Regulation helps tighten supply relative to demand which forces prices to increase. Shale had been pumping away at very unprofitable prices simply because they had a lot of cash. market forces will take control and sensible regulation will help keep a stable number of frackers very profitable. It was a gold rush situation with too many players. Consolidation will happen and the ones that make it will be fine.

I assume they publicly announce this to appease their stock holders.

But announcements like that from a large company also cause other businesses to consider hiring freezes.
