Wrong. That's not how you win the WH. It MUST be about the candidate. This is why you will lose in November. Sadly, Quid Pro Joe will do much worse than Cankles.
Enjoy your loss.

Actually you're wrong (I know, big shock). Well, at least partly wrong. I agree the candidate often matters a lot (of course), but other motivations matter too, and a candidate doesn't have to be wildly popular to garner lots of support from his/her party if the the party is fired up to defeat someone. For example: TRUMP. All through the primaries, he was definitely not very popular. He had his base, but the other repub candidates split the vote, helping him a lot. In the end, they rallied behind him because they Ha..Ha...HATED Hillary with a passion. He found a way to win despite not being wildly popular (initially) with republican primary voters.
And let's compare Romney to Trump. People like you I am sure think Romney, the safe/status quo/establishment candidate was the wrong choice, and that's why he lost, and one needed a firebrand/non-establishment guy like Trump. Well, Romney and Trump both lost by 3,000,000 votes. Obama would have likely beaten Trump by more than that (again, Hillary hatred was higher than Obama hatred). So Trump got lucky: good opponent for him and electoral college nonsense.
D's hate Trump even more than R's hated Hillary. They will turn out passionately to defeat Trump. Trump's main chance is to again get super lucky with the electoral college. He is -9.2 on net approval (see 538). Obama, at this same point in his first term was already in positive territory, and remained there up until election day. In the end, in the popular vote, it was a pretty close election with Romney. I don't see Trump ever exceeding -7 net approval. His -9 is about the best he's been his entire term, and often much, much, lower. This is not good (for him). This is reality.
I won't pull a flagpole and guarantee ANYthing related to this election (because I detested that shtick/nonsense). But I'd be very worried if I were Trump. And he is, and shows that with all his tweets. He wanted Bernie. He ain't getting him.
