I fail to see how those things are mutually exclusive from each other and "getting your sheep to the polls" is literally how elections work. Are people, sheep or otherwise, supposed to not go to the polls?

The "tent" is the entire Republican party. It was thought that people might break from party ranks or stay home, but it's now understood that people will vote for the party in place of an undesirable candidate just to see the party win (i.e. a severe and previously underestimated increase in tribalism). This is somewhat ironic given the marked increase in executive power we've seen over the past 20 years, where an undesirable candidate can end up taking the party as a whole for a ride (and thus a vote for the party really is a vote for the candidate).

The reason for this huge increase in tribalism? Well that's less clear and I'll be interested in reading about it in 25 years when we can look back with better clarity. It's easy to blame the media but people have been consuming outrage media for centuries, although we're certainly consuming more than we ever have today. My guess is that it has more to do with an increase in totally intractable positions and aggressive demographic shifts within the parties.

The last time the American electorate was this polarized (or close depending on how you measure it) was during the gilded age. Then, like now, there was huge and growing economic inequality. There is quite a bit of scholarship showing that economic inequality drives polarization.

Why is a 2nd tier candidate polling ahead of Trump?

Trump is aiming at 100% approval of Republicans by getting Republicans to leave the party.

He pushed Jeff Flake out and his seat was taken by a Democrat.

Justin Amash is a conservative elected to Congress as a Republican but left the party because he spoke out against Trump. He voted to impeach Trump.

Mitt Romney voted to convict Trump and Republicans are disowning him. He may choose to caucus with Democrats the next 5 years.

Democrats gained 41 seats in the House in 2018.

Dems won most of the senate races, but there were few Republican seats up for re-election.

Trump supporters are loud at rallies. But how large are they in total numbers?

And the party of fiscal conservatism is now the Democrat party. (It really always was when you look at which party runs up the biggest deficits)

The odds makers, who put their money where their mouths are, have trump at -160 with a 60% chance of winning. A while back, I saw a poll where Trump was ahead in all of the swing states. If that is true, Trump could get less than 45% of the popular vote and still win the electoral college.

Wishful thinking and an underestimation/misunderstanding of the general populace in my opinion.

The Democratic party needs to move on from December 2016 rage "how could people be so dumb/racist/whatever" speculation

I could believe that and I think it meshes well with the demographic argument. People become polarized when they start to have less and less in common with "the other side."

The dems have failed miserably. Dem policies are popular but Dems get caught up in elitist woke politics so country joe and jane say to themselves 'these snobby city folk are going to force me to change how I look at life - I'm staying with the Rs.'

these assertions are not provable to the affirmative or negative, but always beware of someone saying 'it's never been this bad ever before' or for generations. UNless that person is a trained historian.

Defending today, remember that there are more independents than there are either Ds or Rs. That is new and while most do lean one way or the other, it does suggest a vast middle ground of people who don't vote the party ticket.

This mouth-breathers also refuse to believe he will stop sending them food stamps unless they get jobs. And if they get jobs they don't qualify for food stamps. But, "fake news," they scream,

"Among those hardest-hit will be Trump’s core supporters: Rural, white males. The most rural 20 percent of America is the most likely to live in a household that receives food stamps."

on the benefits side, poor and middle class whites generally vote R against their self interest ...because of racism. They feel all these benefits are going to African Americans who are lazy, and not to people like them, who are economic victims. They are so incensed about people who are undeserving (in their eyes) getting free stuff that they vote against all benefits.

remember the phony obamaphone thing? Rs are still voting against Ds on that bit of a hoax.

Dems never seem willing to actually take the gloves off and call Republicans out on their hypocrisy. They tend to play nice -- "When you go low, we go high" or whatever it was.

It should be really easy to do so with Trump, you have him on video saying he won't go golfing, and then dozens of golf trips (for example).

I sort of doubt anyone will use that against him in some effective way, though.
