It probably won't, Kiptum has now dropped sub 28 last 10ks in his last two marathons off very fast pace races. He can probably go under 27:30 or faster in the jogfest Olympic marathon. I've never seen anyone be able to finish like him before, Kipchoge included.
I think it will be interesting to see him try.
Sheesh, the active GOAT's WR was just broken, within 12 months of the Olympic games. If this doesn't interest you, you need to find another sport to follow.

Kipchoge might be mad at himself for not pushing the 2nd half with some of his marathons. Comparing the closing runs of Kipchoge and Kiptum, Kipchoge looks like he still has a lot to give and when he finishes, it feels like he can still run another 10k. Looking at Kiptum at the end, he actually pushes himself!
If Hellen Obiri wins New York, she'll have to WMM like Sifan Hassan and I think Hellen is the only one who can kick with and trouble Sifan in an unpaced marathon like the Olympics.
It’s interesting to go back to the pre race interviews and predictions . Kiptum was about the only one not predicting a record. The rest , especially the American women were disappointing. Some people predicted Rupp could break the AR because he said he had a good buildup. He’s too old and has had too many injuries .
Mantz ran slower than Steve Jones did 40 years ago on this course. In his prime he is just one minute faster than Rupp in his old age. Going to bet 100 Kenyans and 50 Ethiopians could beat Mantz. Not a good look for the USA in the marathon.
I have trouble seeing Rupp trying to qualify for the Olympics.
He is so far off the top guys (not even in same zip code). He is much closer to the top woman than the top man, It will be difficult to justify to himself to train for another year

I believe the course route was changed from 40 years ago, but I don't know if it had an effect on the race.

In his pre race interview Rupp said he wants to keep going , maybe until 2028.

Kipchoge is doing just fine rolling around in his appearance-fee millions from races/Nike
Then there is that theory is he is over 40 and not actually 38, if so he might never 2:00
The men are pretty much done after people get "bored" with 2:00 ha
I wonder how long until there is a multiple men sprint finish at the end of a 2:00
But the women still have some amazing unknowns ahead.
Who is going to be the first American woman to do 2:15 ?
40K and Matt Choi is right on pace! 2:50:49, on pace for 3:00:11! It is going to be close. Charging up Michigan Avenue, a slice of pizza in one hand and a GoPro in the other. Flash bulbs from cameras are reflecting off his bulging bare chest! Women are throwing roses at his feet! Only three drones remain overhead; the others have dropped off his killer sub-7:00 pace.
