That's easy. Bloomberg says he's willing to spend billions to defeat Tiny no matter who the nominee is. He also wants some control over how his money is spent.

To do that, he needs to develop a base of support. Once you have a constituency you have some power in the process.

Bloomberg, as much as possible, wants to help control the policy agenda.

And as we’ve seen with trump & gingrich, a political campaign offers a lot of opportunities for graft & tax breaks & publicity & whatever. It’s not necessarily about winning.

I'm exaggerating - Biden is still leading, most likely, but it looks now like Sanders is going to sweep IA, NH and NV. Three in a row might move the needle in SC and Super Tuesday.
