I think there are simply not enough people who care. I'll do my part and go campaign in PA swing counties, but people are really disgusted by everything. And we know who low turnout favors more...

It's a two party system so the easiest path is to simply wait it out and point the finger until the pendulum swings back their way. I do agree there will be a vacuum when trump is gone though - not sure how they fill it. If Dems somehow take full control with a sweep in 2020 they will have to fight and win a battle of perception and actual change. The public needs to see tangible things get done and they need to be convinced too. We can't have another Obama who meant well and was principled but allowed the right to play down his achievements and messages.

LL - I would ask you where do Dems go if they lose? Sure the Dems took over the House in 2018 but the Repubs maintained their majority in the Senate. The Repubs have the majority of state governors. The Supreme Court is titled to conservatives now. Trump has been filling judge positions left and right. The 2020 election could indeed be a landslide for Trump. What happens to Dems if Trump is acquitted in the Senate trial, Repubs retake the House and the 2020 election is a landslide victory for the re-election of Trump. What do Dems do if that happens?

Everyone here on this thread seems to think he is a lock to lose to whichever candidate wins the Democratic primary. How is he a heavy favorite?

Two reasons - many trump supporters are embarrassed and prefer to not support him openly, so the polls are not very accurate. The other reason is he controls messaging and his campaign is loaded with cash. The incumbent ALWAYS has the advantage. This will ensure he gets high turnout from republicans. The big challenge for him is to do better than in 2016, because he only won by a hair. He cannot do better than 2016, especially because he has done nothing to appeal to moderate voters.. he has chosen to concentrate on retaining his base. However, he can obviously win again if there is poor turnout on the left.. so potentially he can win with as little as 45% of the general vote.

To be honest I think Trump will be gone before you know it. Even Repubs are tired of his tweeting, his bombastic blowhard declarations. The guy is a turd (and I hate that term) but, aside from the impeachment, the country has been running on all cylinders with him at the helm. He is a major league jerk - but you have to admit that we have 50-year lows in unemployment, the stock market is at all time highs and no wars and nothing else causing the country to suffer. During the Obama presidency unemployment averaged 9.3% - during the Trump presidency - it has averaged 3.9 %. Quite a difference.

You do know that unemployment went down every month for the last 6 years of Obama's presidency and the stock market also hit all time highs after a very, very drastic drop from the Great Recession.

There was great economic momentum coming out of the Obama administration.

Throw in a big tax cut and increased spending and how could you mess up that economy?

Obama started with $1 T + deficit that had to be expanded for the recovery and then came down almost every year from that while keeping GDP positive and unemployment down.

Trump jacked it up over $1T while things were good.

All while starting trade wars that required subsidies for farmers and uncertainty of where it is all going.

What's left in the toolbox if things turn sour?

I agree we can't deny he's been president while the economy has CONTINUED to do well. But you have to count the ballooning deficit (both domestic budget and increased debt ceiling) against him because they were not necessary. Bill Clinton used the strong economy to limit debt and he was the last to have a balanced budget.

Your last sentence is obviously misleading because Bush gave Obama a horrible unemployment avg to start with. Trump couldn't have gotten a better head start. What was Obama's unemployment avg over his last 4 years?

I think you are not giving enough worries to how Trump has energized his base. They love him beyond all measure, and they think that if he loses the country will end. Really. They think that - they think they are voting to preserve America. Point is, turnout will be higher on both sides.

But the only turnout that will matter is in MI WI PA AZ

Everywhere else doesn't matter. Those are some mighty white states - Trump country. That's the worry.

Important to highlight the factor of perception. Due to Obama being modest and GOP being able to control messaging, a big chunk of the country was convinced Obama was horrible at everything. Trump lies every single day about how awesome everything is - that has an effect.

LL - please read this carefully. The average unemployment during Obama was 9.3%. The average unemployment during Trump has been 3.9%. That is a HUGE difference. We have to give this one in a major way to Trump.

And to be more clear to respond to you, I don't think Trump has sound economic policies.

I assume you are a free market lover and can't endorse his tariffs.

I assume you are a fiscal conservative and don't like ballooning deficits.

Congrats on the tax cut. You know he didn't write the code, he just signed what they put in front of him.

And it makes it harder to give tax breaks in the future for stimulus and raising taxes is always hard, so increasing revenue in the future will be a chore.

The mining and manufacturing industries aren't really doing great.

It's service and tech and big companies that are booming.

Cut the bs please, you know that's a ridiculous comparison with Obama inheriting the terrible economy. The question that matters is what did each do with what they were given?

Obama - brought us back from the apocalypse to ultimately hand off a super strong economy

Trump - took the super strong economy and then unnecessarily borrowed bigly against future generations and lowered taxes just to try to outdo Obama, barely able to keep up
