Of course they had to break into his safe, Trump wasn't there. The whole point of a safe is securing information. You don't go telling others the combination to your safe (heck, it may require biometric access that only Trump himself could physically provide in person). He wasn't there, so, no, nobody could open the safe for them. If there really were top secret documents in there, you wouldn't want anyone without the proper clearance to be able to open the safe either.

Before filing any motion in federal court, there is a "meet and confer" requirement where the parties are required to discuss the issue and see if agreement can be reached, before one of the parties has to file a motion and burden the court. The DOJ filed its motion to UNSEAL the relevant pleadings because Trump refused to agree to their public disclosure.

Trump could have unlocked the safe in his house anytime in the past 19 months and simply returned the classified documents that he stole. He also could have not stolen them in the first place. But Trump didn't want to give up the classified documents that he stole from the US government. Stealing classified documents is a crime, BTW, which is why the police had to confiscate them from him.

I am outraged by this senseless escalation of a situation in which DJT was fully cooperating. Garland himself approved the subpoena and Biden acted like he knew nothing about it. Meanwhile, Hunter Biden who for all we know had plenty of info about Ukraine and China in his hands at some point, is walking the streets free as a bird. He should not have a security clearance.
