Now I think I'll watch my recorded Trials race again and watch Rupp win. Did you hear? He's going to the Olympics AGAIN! How many times is that for Rupp?
If you have a beer with Jimmy, ask him if he thinks he"ll ever make it to the Olympics. Thanks.
It’s almost as if cheating can make you better at running. Crazy.

The trials run was a brilliant move by Walmsley, as is this. He stirs it up some, the games do or do not happen, Rupp finishes wherever.
Then Walmsley wins Comrades, and the story reads "Sure Rupp was 6th, but Walmsley first at an even longer race." Oh, and Rupp's former coach won there, too, will Rupp rise to the challenge?
Welcome to earth.
No one cares about Walmsley. He runs in an event no one cares about.
He finished over a mile behind Rupp He doesn't get to fire shots. When he can run within 2 minutes, or be with Rupp in sight of the finish line he can talk.
you beat me to it
If you read the whole interview, I think Walmsley comes off OK, not too arrogant. E.g:
"The argument was never that the best ultrarunner could beat the best marathoner. The best marathoners are probably currently the best distant runners in the world. So, the best marathoner should be able to beat the best ultrarunners, and that’s how things played out. But, in my opinion, I don’t think the gap is as big as people make it out to be.
And I think if I focused on a marathon, I could close the gap a little more. Whether I’d have been competitive for a top three spot Saturday, probably not. Not on that day, at least. Like I said, I think my best day wouldn’t have gotten me in the top three. But I don’t think that’s to say I’m completely out of the game. I was happy with how things went. It wasn’t my best run, but I think it proves more that top ultrarunners aren’t out of the picture in terms of being competitive on the roads."
Is this a serious post? Galen is directly linked to a coach who is suspended for approximately 100000000 violations. Fans of clean sport at least have to be skeptical of Rupp. Pretty easy to see why people wouldn't root for him.

Why do people keep saying Rupp doesn’t know who Walmsley is? Why wouldn’t Rupp know who won WS100 the last two years? Does Rupp live under a rock?
Running is basically my life. I could probably name the winner of every marathon major and every Olympic medalist for the past 30 years. But until this year I had never heard of Jim Walmsley, and only because of LetsRun, which I’d guess Rupp doesn’t visit frequently. I could not tell you another winner of Western States. Did that Dean Karnazes guy ever win it? Walmsley exceeded my expectations in Atlanta, but ultra running is still a niche sport that most mainstream running fans (let alone pros) care nothing about.

Because no one cares about the WS100. Stupidest event ever. That’s just for the runners who weren’t talented enough to become marathoners so they do that because they have too much time on their hands.

Once you get a chance send me the article where Rupp was found guilty or tested positive for anything.

You missed the point of why the post that I quoted is stupid.
If Walmsley is saying that he can't root for Rupp because of the anti-doping violations that have surrounded him and his long-time coach, and your response is "yeah but he's better than everyone", you are helping make Jim's case.

Dude come on now. At mile 26 of the Tokyo marathon where Rupp is in a group of 3 or 4 runners you are NOT gonna be route-ing for Rupp? I'll be yelling myself hoarse for him.
I know plenty of people that will be rooting AGAINST rupp. In the same way, I watched the 2012 10,000 final with an Ethiopian friend who was rooting against Bekele.

Walmsley displayed more honesty and authenticity in that statement than Rupp has in his entire career.
I agree 100% with what he said. Never been a fan of Rupp. His longtime coach was busted for doping, and so much shady stuff happened at NOP. Are we just supposed to sit here and pretend that all didn't happen now that Al Sal is out of the picture?
If it were getting a beer, or going for a run, I'd rather do both with Jim than Rupp. What the heck would Rupp even talk about? The ideal temperature of his backyard pool for aquajogging?
I'd much rather have a beer with Jim as well unless there was truth serum involved. If I could get Rupp to answer 3 questions honestly, I'd crowd source a million bucks to make it happen.
1) Have you knowingly ever taken a PED?
2) DO you think Alberto ever gave you a PED without you knowing?
3) Should you have been ineligible for NCAA violations during your entire Oregon career as your parents never paid Nike back for all the stuff you got before you enrolled?

You'd have to be an assshole to not route for Rupp. He's the greatest American distance runner in generations, and the very best of the era that got us out of the dark ages. How do you not route for the guy you were so desperate we'd eventually have, circa 2003?
How funny is it that he wins one race and everyone chooses to erase his questionable past?
I'm not rooting against Rupp necessarily but I think it's insane to not at least comprehend why someone wouldn't.
Thanks for the laugh, gentlemen. This was one of the most hilarious posts I've read in years. Do you guys ever go for a run, or is your message board commentary your crowning jewel?

LOL, my thoughts exactly..
Maybe 2% of all posts on LRC in regards to Rupp are positive going back a decade plus..what did Walmsley say that hasn't been alluded to or thought by most of the running community..he says it and now these closet Rupp supporters are in full force? Please..
Bro..anybody with an OTQ likely has dreams of making the podium spot even if it's a huge long shot, why else compete? How many men and women throw in the towel each year at the trials because their shot is gone, or don't toe the line, yet are still somehow training? Ya'll are absolutely unreal on these boards when it comes to certain topics. Anybody with a semi rational thought would agree that JW's 1st appearance in a road marathon at the Olympic Trials nonetheless given his focus for nearly 6 years was very impressive.

A beer with Rupp or Walmsley? Rupp has met and raced against the greatest runners in the world. He probably has many interesting stories about guys like Bekele and Kipchoge and other U.S. Olympians. With Walmsley maybe you discuss fueling?

This is just sour grapes and flat out jealousy, which is the theme on these boards - a bunch of hobbyjoggers who are jealous of Rupp's talent and the opportunities he had from an early age.
As to your fantasyland questions, the only one that is remotely interesting might be #2 - although definitely an odd question.

Pretty sure there are many points to prove your response holds no weight. Sub 4 minute milers now in the sport, and OTQ men/women have been rampant in ultra's and WS to be exact for over a decade now. Toe the line @ an Ultra, and let us know how all things are going @ mile 85?
There's no promise men with faster road times will excel at the 50-100 mile distance on trails. In some races, yes there is a higher correlation with road times. Check your WS history, there are sub 2:18 men that have blown up and never crossed the finish line, or fell back from guys who are likely 20-30 minutes slower on the roads. It's all a relative skill and nothing is promised. Not all fast 5/10k guys translate well to the marathon. No difference in these broad brushed statements about ultra runners vs road guys.
