The benefit to requiring registration is NOT so people are required to identify themselves. Of course, anyone can remain anonymous while still having to register. Burner emails are not hard to acquire.

What it does is make people think twice before posting worthless spam, racist nonsense, etc (since the account can be banned). And I'm all for having some significant tolerance...let stuff go generally but ban those that need banning. If they want to find another burner email, ok, fine, but its a hurdle... and just that minimal hurdle will greatly reduce moderator workload.

I post anonymous all the time but I'd be perfectly fine with making an account if that was the policy.

I've reported several dozen posts over the last few years and all of them have been deleted within a few minutes. I just reported some post calling Michelle Obama 'Mooshell' and the entire thread was deleted promptly (for what it's worth, I think you can have a somewhat civil discussion on celebrating MLK day . More moderators would help, but I honestly wonder if most people here just get pissed when they see stuff they find very objectionable and don't think to report it for some reason. For all you people who like voting, the report a post feature already seems like it has more power to get rid of questionable comments than a simple downvote. Use it more often.

Somewhat related, I hate reddit and would not at all want to see nested comment sections, voting, etc. implemented in letsrun. The only subreddit I've tried participating in was the math one, and damn that place was awful. Despite requiring people to register I still saw misogynistic and racist crap whenever someone posted even a remotely political thread on the subreddit. Those people didn't usually even get downvoted too dramatically. In fact the voting system on that sub just seems like it drove the content towards very casual mathematics, which drove the people who actually knew what they were talking about away.

You can always open another registered account. Registering does nothing.

LOL, you need to read a biography of George Orwell. He was about as far away from a modern 'lefty' as you could get. 1984 was an attack on the Soviet Communist Party, as well as its middle-class, suburban 'lefty' supporters in the UK and elsewhere. Orwell was drawing on his experience of actually fighting in the Spanish Civil War against real fascists, and his painful discovery that the communists he was fighting with were as bad as the fascists.
