And the real problem imo is that it's a different kind of race. People are gonna make moves and he has to go with them or run solo, knowing that he'll have to catch the pack again at some point. He could be capable of running an evenly paced 2:12 but will blow up if he tries to cover moves that he can't cover. I imagine this is going to be the case for a lot of runners at these trials, especially on this course. No one is there to PR or run a time trial type race. Anyone with any chance of qualifying will be racing and the ones who don't survive will blow up and run really slow times. I doubt that any sensible "chase pack" running even splits and hoping to finish strong will catch the top 3.
