My headlight is always bright enough to pop a reflection off the deer's eyes, but not strong enough to illuminate their outline in the dark, and its unsettling every time.
I find it creepy too. The first time I used my headlamp it lit up the eyes of numerous deer who were standing on a hill that was just blackness in the dark, so all these pairs of glowing dots were just floating in space above me. I had to turn my head to take the light off of them it weirded me out so much. This morning the eyes were all hanging out at the edge of a stand of trees, just starting to move out of it. Also creepy.
Another thing the headlamp lights up is spider eyes. Last year I saw a very bright, almost turquoise glint at the side of the path and thought it must just be a piece of glass or a shiny mineral in a rock. Nope. It was the eyes of a huuuuuge wolf spider. Now all I see is spider eyes at the side of the path or in the grass and sometimes right ON the path, skittering away from me.
