There is no trolling here. Galen did run faster indoors, certainly in the middle distances. Many of you fanboys have yet to explain Galen's lack of ability to run an extremely fast 5000m. You guys just say in essence that NONE of his many 5000m races were Rupp-certified. It was the pace makers, the weather, the fact that Kejelcha only ran 12:53 in Brussels meant that Galen could not run 12:50, EXCEPT Galen ran 13:08. The evidence is overwhelming that Galen could not do it.

Most of the elites are not trying to peak indoors so your list is meaningless. Kenenisa could have run 12:40 indoors if he peaked for it.

Rupp is considerably faster than both Ritz and Solinsky at 3k and 10k, but is slower at 5k. But 12:58 was his max right?

It's obvious you aren't interested in having an honest discussion because you are completely ignoring what I wrote. I never said Rupp didn't have the opportunity to run fast, I just think it's stupid to believe he was incapable of anything faster than 12:58 given his other performances.

You can believe whatever you want. The facts are on my side. When Galen had MANY chances to run a fast 5000m and he failed every time, this is overwhelming evidence that it was not in his wheelhouse. You would have a much stronger argument with Mo Farah, who was winning these races. IF Galen had won a few 13 flat races, I could possibly subscribe to your theory. However, when you are fading in 12:55 races, that tells you that the runner is at his limit.

When Galen ran 7:30 and 26:44, he won each race by a healthy margin and with a strong finish. I would like to know how much faster you think he could have run at these distances. I would also like to know why you think he crushed Ritz (7:39, 27:22) and Solinsky (7:34, 26:59) at 3k and 10k but was (in your opinion) maxed out at 12:58 and thus could not have matched their times at 5k.

It's true that when Rupp was in his best 5000m shape he didn't get into a really fast race, and runners like him are rarely able to get really close to the winners in somewhat slower races, because a gap emerges in the kick. In races like that they don't run their optimal pace. Rupp was a guy who could stick until 400m with the best guys on multiple occasions but would usually be dropped in the last lap. The one major exception was in the 10000m in London where he even had a shot at Farah if he had been more aggressive. That was the year he ran 51 or 52 to close the U.S. 5000m over Lagat. In a few chances, the conditions weren't as good or the leaders didn't go hard from the gun. So, he looked like and had the capacity to run faster. But Solinsky and Lagat ahead of him on the list by 3 and 5 seconds, respectively, also had that ability. Solinsky in the 12:46 race in 2012 would have run low 12:50 or under. He could stick with those guys at his best. Lagat closed a 12:59 in 51 at his best and beat Bekele, so I think he was probably capable of low 12:40s at that time. You only get credit for what you actually run but many elites don't quite hit their potential in races because a lot has to go right at the top level to do it.

Some of you probably believe Zersenay Tadese is a 2:04 marathoner. You will go on and discussing why he is a 2:04 marathoner. EXCEPT he is NOT, just as Galen is NOT a 12:50 5000m runner.

that's what sport is - hitting your potential at the right moment(s)

timing, durability, and talent are critically important and need to work together for success.

i'm sure there are football, basketball, baseball players who would have been better than they were if they started on the right team at the right time with the right coach in the right year.

But they didn't.

the greats make it happen with what they have and the timing they get. With running, it matters most about yourself, not teammates. Potentially even more difficult to hit the nail on the head because you are carrying all the weight.

Lebron kept getting to the NBA finals with his lousy Cavaliers team is one mediocre example i can think of.

4% seems to be the magic rule between 5 & 10. Take 4% off 13:22 (half his 10k) which is 32s, comes to 12:50. It was a very good time.

Zersenay fastest marathon pre 4% was like 2:11.

I find it interesting that this 3:50 miler, who most of you say must have been like a 3:48 miler, since you say indoors is always faster, could not hang and kick in a 5000m race. Galen was at his limit running 12:58-13:00 pace. That is why this legendary 3:48 miler could not kick.
