This isn't exactly what happened, but he did indeed quit the team. He's got a VERY minor sponsor now (paying him less than $6000 I think), but he's running for Philadelphia Runner Track Club.

This is why DIII shouldn't be allowed to run against DI. Patel is just taking spots from well deserving DI mid-levels who have yet to prove themselves in competitive meets.

I will put it into perspective. Patel is a very good college runner. He is an excellent D3 runner who would only be a good D1 runner. He beat Reiser but Resier has better college PRs and he was injured in the fall. Patel lost to guys like Basten from Minnesota who is a year younger than Patel and was slower than him in HS. He lost to Soto from Iowa who was only a decent HS runner. D3 guys like to make HS comparisons because their times are closer to Hs times than D1 guys are. D1 guys don't look back so it really isn't that important how well Patel or Reiser were in HS. Patel is a god to D3 guys but he would possibly get lapped by the top D1 guys in a 5k and he wouldn't even qualify for nationals. He chose to go D3 instead of getting lost in D1. He is at a private school so I wouldn't classify him as blue collar over some of the D1 guys who are attending their state schools.

Reisser wasn't injured in the fall. He redshirted because Jon Davis got mono and decided to redshirt. so he doesn't have an excuse to get clapped by Patel
Patel is about the 100th best overall collegiate distance runner. There are D2 guys who are better and there are many D1 guys like Davis and Hoare who would smash him in the 5k also. He chose to go the JV route.
I'd say top 100 in the whole nation over all divisions is pretty good. I'm gonna make a guess that you would be lucky to have been top 100 in D3, JV as you said.
