Absolutely no respect for the American runners. Stop jumping on your high horse calling this racism, it is just national / local interest. I can't tell you the name of the run of the mill East Africans that win the Bolder Boulder each year, but I can name the Americans and where they place. I bet most people on this board couldn't name the second place women's runner, but they all know that Shalane was third and Huddle was 4th. There is a national interest in all sports, this is nothing new. Just feel fortunate that the marathon is getting as much press as it got considering it wasn't an American who won.

I don't say this too often but well done LRC. We don't even have to go to the -isms. It's clear that some implicit bias is going on because it's the women's race and a non white athlete.

The "headline" being discussed here was in the marathon pullout section, and accompanies the striking image just fine.

While it is true that many eastern African runners are underrated, it's undeniable that they have huge genetic advantages. They have thousands of years of the fittest ancestor's DNA in their blood along with bodies adapted to living at high altitude. Even the african runners who didn't grow up running 10k to school have little difficulty reaching world-class levels. Just look at the 17-18 year olds running considerably faster than galen rupp or cam levins did at the peaks of their careers after training for 24 months or less. It's simply a fact that they don't have to work nearly as hard to get fast. What africans have you heard of doing 40 mile up-tempo runs on the treadmill in 85 degrees like rupp has? That being said, just because they generally don't have to work as hard doesn't mean they arent training at superhuman levels compared to the average human.

Among the 100 most famous athletes in the world, there is just one track and field/road runner, Usain Bolt at #7.

The rest are mostly soccer, tennis, basketball, and football players. Mary Keitany is almost completely unknown. Probably not more than 10% of running fans could even name her. The headline for Shalane Flanagan's win did not name her either and mentioned tears. When a right winger like Rojo claims racism, he sees it in a liberal source, the Times. Winner would not have been my choice for the headline, but it was not a racist choice. It looked like a headline fit to the picture, which was at such a distance that it didn't even make the winner's face discernible.

Yes. I think use of the word "winner" is unnecessary. Since the picture was conveying that nobody was close, they could have just said "nobody in sight" or "leaving the pack out of the picture". The picture essentially said enough, so fewer words would be preferable.

But sure, if they use "winner" they should probably just use "Keitany"

I think you're a Conservative who is trying too hard to put the NY Times in a bad light.

A lot of things on letsrun are racist and I argue with Rojo and Wejo about it occasionally but I don't think this is one of them. I mean, it might be, but it's not intentional, and it's probably a combination of things. I think it's more just a combination of foreigner bias and her quiet personality.

100% correct. This happens VERY often in journalism. And also lures you into reading the article to find out who won, etc.

It's not racist, but it is certainly discriminatory towards runners, as being a runner has little to do with race. Running is constantly made fun of due to the popularity of football/basketball and the oversized nature of the two sports. It is very crude in this day and age to give such great respect to humans who were simply born gigantic. Now practiced skill and discipline are two things to praise, and certainly Keitany has those things.
