Of course it's up for debate. How do you think laws are made? By the rich conservative (mostly white male) elites. Every law in existence is a social construct made by humans for humans. Calling it a law doesn't make it right. We should learn from history. Also, it is either fully legalized and medicinally realized in about half the country give or take. That is just even more ridiculous and shows just how broken and arbitrary our justice system is.

In fairness, there is evidence to suggest that pot can be associated with psychosis in young minds that are predisposed to psychotic illness.
There is also evidence to suggest that it serves as potent analgesic and appetite stimulant for cancer patients undergoing palliation.
Anecdotally, I know doctors (myself included), lawyers, engineers, successful fathers, and athletes who smoke from time to time for recreation.
I also know people who smoke habitually (3 or more times per day) and absolutely suffer from amotivation and memory issues (whether it's the chicken or the egg, who knows).
Bottom line, it is neither as bad as some people make it out to be and neither is it the panacea that others label it as.
Pot is a recreational drug that is certainly no worse than alcohol and should absolutely be legal in our society. Too much money is spent investigating and processing people for weed offenses. Too many otherwise productive individuals have options taken away from them because of a black mark on their record.
It's unfortunate that this talented young man may have options taken away from him in the future for such a minor offense. He likely won't spend much time in jail but this very well could hamper his running career and future professional life.
With that being said, the law is what the law is. Even though it should (and hopefully will) change, don't order three pounds of pot through the mail to a state where it's not legal. That's just dumb.

An important note is I simply asked him if he had access to a clinical diagnosis; I do understand that in a relatively very small number of cases it is possible for pot to trigger a psychotic EPISODE in some who might be predisposed to it, which is far different from triggering the onset of something much more serious such as schizophrenia for example. I was pointing out the issue with the poster linking psychosis/psychotic episode to pot use merely as a layperson's observation with no clinical proof whatsoever.
I'm glad you added 'chicken or the egg, who knows'; certainly when it comes to 'amotivation' I'd say a lot of those folks were already well on their way there prior to getting into serious pot use.
FWIW, I don't claim weed to be a panacea for anything, certainly nowhere in my post.
Finally, we have here a young man who has put himself at risk of a potentially horribly unjust and draconian punishment; our stupid culture continues to mete out ridiculously slight punishments for people with multiple drunk driving offenses, and here in Minnesota we just saw a woman get away with probation for killing someone while driving drunk, yet this kid could potentially be looking at a serious punishment if it doesn't fall his way. We are really and truly stupid here. That said, there may be a universe someplace where it's ok to utilize the mail for shipping 3.5 pounds of weed, but it's not here in 2018 Amurrica. Dumb move; I hope he gets the best lawyer money can buy.

I think the D3 regional this year was super fast, so maybe that's where the time was from. But note that he was a redshirt freshman so the other times are high school. I also ran D3 in that region and there were guys who ran 4:40/10:00 in high school who went on to sub 24 8K, and 8 3K by the time they were in college. Plus he has had great coaching with Wetmore and Carius for the past two years.
Wonder if the arch-conservatives here will want to invade Colorado with troops and militia to take away marijuana laws. Wouldn't put it past them.

If he was getting great coaching from Wetmore, he would have stayed in Boulder.
Real question is who coughed up the 25K for his bail? If he's a trust fund baby and his parents paid it, why the hell is he selling weed in the first place? I'd love to hear it be his drug connections and him making a mad dash across the border, escape, and live his life out dealing and smoking in peace. Hopefully ol' Al Carius and the Cardinals don't give enough craps to bail him out. That would be disappointing for such a well established and respected program. He likely benefited from a year of training with the CU Buffs as a walk on, and demonstrated remarkable improvement in the two years from high school XC to his redshirt freshman year at North Central where he ran to a 2nd place finish at D3 nationals. In the article outlining his rise to success at North Central he mentioned that he was homesick.

As someone who ran for Stevenson a few years before Jared I can only imagine the immense disappointment being felt by the coaches at the High School. Coach Schauble in particular put his heart and soul into Jared and this is how he was repaid. No one was a bigger supporter of Jared than Coach Schauble and Coach's heart must have been in knots when he heard the news. Jared was an immense talent who ran 4:21 in the 1600 and a 1:56 800 Meter leg on the 4x800 as a Freshman in High School. All the coaches on the team recognized his potential the second he stepped foot onto the track at Stevenson. A lot of fellow students on the team looked up to Jared as well and continued to follow him closely into his collegiate running. Point is that Jared was someone incredibly special to the team and school and he tore it down by being a complete idiot. We'll see what ends up coming out of the charges, but if everything is true then this will go down as such an incredible waste of God given talent.

They should be disappointed in the law, not him.
Hey you legal experts. Innocent until proven guilty. A good defense attorney might be able to argue the case that the package was not intended for him, or maybe get him off on a technicality. If he actually did it and has an otherwise good record he'll have a felony but can plea down to a much lesser sentence than 5-8 years behind bars as others are spouting off here.
