The older generation is hung up on pointless hierarchical things like punctuality. It's a morale and productivity killer.
You get your work done. You have a valuable set of skills. You shouldn't be doubting the security of your job. Go somewhere where you won't have doubt.
Millennials are the most productive and educated generation thus far. Don't waste your time with those who haven't moved out of the 1970s.
Sorry, only going to read the first page... if you agreed to start at 8:30 when you were hired, then f@#$ing show up at 8:20 and start work at 8:30. Grow up.

If I leave (or get terminated), a lot of stuff that needs to get done won't get done (as it didn't prior to my hiring) and the organization loses credibility.
2nd side note: I've lost about 10 lbs since being hired due to marathon training resulting in an all-American fratboy look turning into something closer to an Auschwitz survivor. I think my boss thinks I'm gay too and she's highly religious.
3rd side note: Probably drank a bit too much at the holiday party (and after-bar) and chatted-up an older well-endowed admin who told me she thinks I'm attractive. We didn't do anything (thank goodness) but I'm sure that didn't help my office cred. Was late that day (9:30)...
Perhaps this has already been stated, but this is LetsRun.com. Every single person on here owns their own company, runs a sub 15 5k, makes >200k/yr, and is dating at least one beautiful woman that he is able to satisfy twice daily. Why do you have a manager? Is this a Ryan Hall-esque, god is my manager type thing? Does not compute.

Bingo. I show up at 11am and get more done in 3 hours than my coworkers get done all week.
OP, if you are really worried, make a point to show up to work early and just surf letsrun 'til 11am. If you are extra worried, use a VPN (my coworkers don't know what that is).

Was the neurosurgeon canned for showing up 15 minutes late to an empty hospital? Regardless, completely different job/requirements/pay. Regardless, I'd put money on there being something else going on with that kind of termination (like a hard-ass boss that wanted to make a point).
Sure, I'm replaceable. But after the role going unfilled for several months, then me there for a few months, and then another few-to-several months unfilled... it would not look good to the business we need to be respected by.
I'm not looking for a free pass to do whatever I want. This isn't a job that absolutely requires a 8:30 start (ie. people dependent on my input at that hour). The work gets done and it wasn't getting done for months prior and the organization got in trouble.
Follow-up add-on question: 1. hard-ass boss 2. hint to leave 3. is this a place/(boss) I want to be/(work with)?

I was out the door at 5 on the dot today. Had some loose ends that I would have normally hung around to do until 6 or 7 (I've stayed late in the past). That won't happen again.
And to the previous poster; yes, 8:30 will happen going forward and resumes/emails are currently being sent.
Right, my boss says, as long as the work gets done, he does not care. I really spend probably half of the time paid actually with something to do. And sometimes I come in extra late (everyone comes in late) and stay 2h later if things are flowing. I just work quickly and efficiently at the end of the day and not the beginning.
The computer aspect of analysis work makes remote and separate roles more reasonable.

Seriously. Most older employees are there for office morale anyway because one could automate them away quickly with younger employees who can use computers and code or learn code in no time.
Salaried employees especially are not "getting paid to show up at 9" like the closed minded jackwad earlier in the thread said. waged employees clock in, so they are not either. sounds like someone without an actual job who just screams about what others do to make them less productive and add literally nothing.

Your problem is you see these as the only two possibilities, when the reality is, a third, more viable, possibility exists, that showing up late isn't acceptable (regardless of what you think), and if you want the job, you should arrive and start on time.
Or else don't, but then accept that the termination will have come as a result of your own choices, not a system that's set up against you.

I think this is funny. There’s another thread about the pros and cons of being an adult over 30.
Adults over 30 don’t do such mental gymnastics about what time to show up for work.
I showed up late for work all the time in my youth thinking the same thing....no one is here so who cares?
The thing is, you work at your employer’s discretion. Unless you signed some sort of crazy contract your employer can fire you for any reason whatsoever.
You are not special, no matter how well you think you do your job.

pay attention enough to your surroundings to know if it matters. In some cases, yeah, you need to show up right on time every day.
It's this "Show up EARLY to every job at all costs or you're LATE! I wake up at 6AM so you should TOO!" moralizing that makes me laugh.
In many cases it's just old timers spewing steam because the world doesn't work they way it used to. Or people who are bitter because other people are actually doing things with their life besides working.

I happen to work remotely (from my home) so there's nobody watching me for being early or late, or staying early or late, my time recording is between me and my timesheet. And I really like that. Still, I easily recognize that, rightly or wrongly, there are workplaces where arriving on time and staying past the anointed finishing time are important. If you work in a place where that's the culture (which is up to you to figure out), then if you want to work there, conform. If you're uncomfortable confirming to expected norms, leave. That can happen as your choice, or not...
