The lady is a beast. I love that she isn't a trail snob, that she is very confident but doesn't need to disrespect other runners, and I hope she doesn't get robbed of the Ultrarunner of the Year title yet again.

(Not that the title means much, specialy after last year some of the voters made their choices and reasons public and it was plain obvious it's a popularity contest to some extent, there's a clear trail and 100-mile bias, and the members make little effort to follow international races. Still, she deserves the recognition.)

Ok so basically people disagree with this and don't agree with me. I want to be respected here, and agreed with. I might not be elite, but I have a lot of brains for running. I know what I'm saying. I literally think Bekele would get under 10 hours. It is 2:37 marathon pace, so he needs to go through marathon splits 34 minutes more less then his pb. Of course, I don't literally think he is interested in ultra's anyway, so we won't get to see it happen ever.

The same formula that people use to predict times simply doesn't work very well beyond 50K, because serious fueling is required beyond 2 hrs of hard running. Bekele might be able to crush the full but since he doesn't understand how his body will react when he has to fuel for a 50, 66, or even 100 miles, you can't predict his finishing time to be a straight line trend from the full. Why don't these guys run Comrades? There is money to be made. Do the South Africans keep other African countries' runners out?

No idea what your running background is. But I think you have no idea of the skill set a ultrarunner needs. That is quite different from a 2:05 Marathon runner.

History shows that not many World Class Marathon runners made an impact in ultrarunning. Most of them actually failed at the Comrades Marathon. (Alberto Salazar is one of the few exceptions with his win there)

The longer the race, the more the skill set shifts. If Marathon running is 100% running skills, it is probably only 85% in 100k races and maybe 50% in 100 milers and 24 hour races.

Another problem is that after their Marathon career most Top runners are literally done. They exhausted their bodies and minds with all that hard training.

The fools who think that success at a short distance guarantee success at a longer distance are clueless. Usain Bolt should be able to run sub 3:30 for 1500 with easy, a WR if he really tried, and he could easily break 2 hours for the marathon. What Pete K and Sandy Vi did in their transcon records was something most top marathon runners would fail at before the first day is half over; and consider the weather they ran in when putting in 50+ miles in a day--rain and mid 30-40s while dealing with traffic.

I was a sub-2:30 marathoner while in college (2:28). I was running 100+ miles per week. A teammate and I entered a double marathon over Christmas break in our sophomore year. We went through halfway in 3:27 (just under 8:00 pace) with a moderate effort. We had drinks and energy bars/gels available about every five miles and could carry them. My friend, who had times similar to mine (faster at shorter races, 2:32 marathon), got into trouble--stiffening up, painful hips and knees--at around 30 miles and dropped out. I slowed gradually from there to 42 miles and then had to start walking/jogging/stopping. I finished in 8 hours and 50 minutes and needed a lot of help afterward. Going on for another mile might have been possible in something like "The Crawl" style (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTn1v5TGK_w); another 47.6 miles would have been physically impossible and utterly inconceivable. Although my friend and I didn't train specifically for an ultra (key point, I realize), the difference in how we handled the part of the race after the marathon distance seemed to have very little if anything to do with how fast we could run a marathon. I have to argue that the statement "any sub-230 marathoners [sic] should be able to hold [7:37 pace] past 100mi." (Note: past 100mi!) is either a very misguided and overconfident guess or dumb trolling. I don't think running a 2:29 marathon is any guarantee of being able to finish a 100-mile race, let alone average 7:37.6 per mile in one.

I think people are underestimating how far 100mi is when compared to a marathon or even a 100k. There are guys like Sage and Jim who crush the 100k distance and a great runners, but ultras in the 50mi - 100k range are a entire different sport than a 100mi when you're talking about racing, not just running it. Camille is one of the few who's fast across the board, 50mi to 100mi, and it'll be criminal if she isn't UROY.

Guys like Walmsley and Sage are excellent at converting sugar into energy (red in the diagram), but weaker at converting fat (yellow), whereas athletes like Camille can do both, with a bias towards the lypolitic (yellow).

Top Kenyans and Ethios dwell completely in the red zone. If they cared to be competitive in long ultras, they probably could come up with some great yellow-zone runners, but it would likely be a completely different subset than the current marathon stars. Being able to close 5000m races in 52 at your career peak represents a capability that would likely be at the expense of even running an entire 100 miler, just like trying to get a sub-10 100m sprinter under 5:00 for the mile.

If you read Camille's iRunFar interview after this race, she says she ended up taking in 80-90 grams of carbohydrate per hour, which made her feel a lot stronger than the 60 grams she started on.

I don't know that fat adaptation plays any part in ultrarunning success, considering people can eat throughout the race and the intensity isn't all that hard (compared to a marathon).

No one can maintain the intensity of a marathon for 100 miles. You have to adjust your pace to survive. And, yes regular small bits of food intake are a key to success--you risk burning muscle instead of fat and disaster awaits those who try and do not understand regular calorie intake in necessary.

She was burning 500 kcal more than the 300+ kcal/hour she ingested, so yes she is very fat-adapted.

I've run many marathons and ultras, and completely agree with this.
