If you were Galen Rupp, what would your next marathon be?

tokyo 18, london 18, and berlin 18. elite runners used to do three in a year and do remarkably well. no reason he shouldn't do it while he is doing well. recovering decently after each one is the key.

He should run Rotterdam and crank out a great time. It is fast as hell and he could run low 2:05's. Then he should run a fall marathon.....maybe chicago again or NYC.

The WMM's aren't spread out very well - conducive to two in a year with one of Tokyo, Boston, London and then one of Berlin, Chicago, NYC as he did this year.

It seems that if Galen wants a faster time to his name, while also living up to the American distance-running poster boy image, he has to run at least one of Boston, Chicago, or NYC and it seems a no-brainer that he does NYC next year.

Maybe London for a fast time in the spring before NYC? What would you do if you were him?

I could get on board for Rotterdam from a course standpoint - flat, fast and maybe he could get better pacing than at London. But London is also fast and might pay him a better appearance fee. It would also give Rupp a chance to challenge Hall's 2:06:17 in London for the 2nd fastest American time (record eligible).

IDK how much Farah has to do with NOP these days, but Farah is running London in 2018 and that might be good for Rupp also if they are training together.

Of course, anytime Rupp wins, the doubters and haters will be here on the boards whining and throwing slings and arrows. I have mixed feelings on the career of athlete and coach here, but I am happy for the Chicago win.

I'd love to see him at London. Run a 2:05, AND beat Farah. Do that, and I'm a believer. Until then, the rest of you can continue pretending this dude is the real deal. Your standards aren't very high, really.

Most likely won't be Tokyo (sub-major) or Boston (been there done that). London seems like the obviously choice, but I'm not sure they can pay both Galen and Mo's appearance fees, which are going to be huge. Going out on a limb, I think Galen will recovery quickly from Chicago and possibly go after the American half record in Houston in January or possibly US and World Cross this year, run a few track races in the summer and NY in the fall.

NY is the media capital of the world and all of the NY media outlets do a decent amount of coverage of the NYM. I think Rupp will only do a fall marathon next year with NY being the one, but even if he does 2, it probably won't be Boston. Btw, when Meb won Boston and NY, both times he made national news. Galen's lack of national press is most likely because Chicago is a stepchild to Boston and NY.

- I bet I could ask 20 hobby joggers at my next race about "NOP allegations," and not get anything REMOTELY like your alleged answer. I'd heard something like "what?" This is a bit of a bubble we live in here, I know people I'd call "hobby joggers" who race nearly every weekend, run maybe 25m 5K (which is pretty standard any more), and they can't even tell you who won the Chicago Marathon, or even narrow down the month it happened.

I'm so confused! Everyone basheds on mo for always sitting and kicking, no fast times to his name. Then they turn right around and say time trials are boring?!?! The heck do you want???

Yeah... number ONE which Rupp has. Plus he is fun to watch, he RACES. Screw time trials for glorious pr's... I'd rather watch a RACE any day.

I agree with others: 2020 and 2021 are the focus.

Everything up to then is preparation. He needs to test himself in a least one fast marathon (max 2) before that. But not 2 fast marathons a year for the next 3 years.

I would think he'd try to get one under his belt in the next 3 seasons. Meaning 2018, Spring 2019. Not Fall 2019 (maybe a slow marathon, or nothing).

He could also benefit from some 1/2 marathons, and/or a fast 25k or 30k. He might forgo a marathon for a high quality longer race (or two) one season. You need to be able to run a really fast half to run a good marathon these days.

Fall has Berlin, Chicago, NYC, and Fukuoka (actually winter).

Spring has London, Paris, Boston, and Rotterdam.

Out of those Spring has better options.

I'd be inclined to run Paris or London, then skip next Fall, or run Chicago again (easier course then NYC). Then Boston. Then nothing to the Trials.

Also, Rupp uses 20+ week cycles. That makes a March/April the next best time frame.

Depends....

For spring 2018, both Boston and London will be throwing money at him to come and race there. Boston will see good competition and if Rupp wins there, he is on his way to becoming another great USA marathoner (but his time would need to be at least a low 2hr 08minutes). But the course would be tougher for him and he might not be able to use his track speed so much. He might need to use his mental toughness to win there like Salazar (see 1982 Boston Marathon, the famous "Duel In The Sun").

If Rupp chooses London, then he can definitely use his track speed and improve his 2hr 09minute time from Chicago. He will probably have a bit more competition at London (not much, but still) so he might have a bit more difficulty winning at London (due to flatter course and no hills to use for help). And he would need to run a mid 2hr 07 minute to be in the hunt for a good showing.

For the fall, Berlin is too close to track season and I think I read that Salazar and Rupp will still be looking at track races to help his speed out. Thus NYC is the place to go, especially if Rupp wins at Boston. If Rupp wins both Boston and NYC, he will definitely be considered one of the best USA marathoners, and looking at strong contention for 2020 Olympic gold medal in the marathon.

Which leads up to 2019. Come 2019, I would suspect Rupp would want to run only at Berlin so that Salazar and he can see where he is at compared to other top marathoners for the 2020 Olympics. But then the 2019 World Championships are Sept 28 to Oct 6. Could Rupp go for the WC marathon, or the 10,000-meter track race? If Rupp is selected for the WC marathon, then I suspect Salazar would have Rupp run track in the spring to early summer. Then get ready for the WC marathon. By running the WC marathon, Rupp can get a possible preview of 2020 Olympic marathon.

If, however, Salazar and Rupp decide the WC 10,000-meter track race, then most likely London is 2018, NYC in fall of 2018, and then Boston in spring 2019. Run the 10,000-meter at WC, run the marathon trials in 2020 and run the marathon at 2020 Olympics......
