Why? Because I want to stay fit, healthy, be an example for my kids, and achieve a goal of running in the 2:30s. I figure I've run in the 2:teens, 2:20s, and 2:40s, so I gotta try to hit my new goal before Father Time continues to slow me down. It's good to continue to set goals as you age. Otherwise we'd let ourselves go to sh!t in our mid-30s. :)

The new obnoxious fad is ultras. All the 30 and 40 year old people too fat and slow for marathons now run ultras. Its essentially a long slow hike on the trails with some jogging thrown in. Uber lame. I'm not impressed.
Yes- I have a friend who brags about his ultra running. He "runs" about 12:00 per mile. Seriously? Anyone with patience and time can do that for any distance.
Do you really know that many people who do ultras? I think I've seen some Facebook posts of some of my distance friends but not anyone really close to me except for this one guy at work.

The marathon (or half, or 50k) is something that's done for fun as well - but it's a good short term goal to focus on. I'm never going to drop a time that's respectable to people here - nor do I care to. It's good exercise and a good way for me to see new places and talks with others while running. I like people watching during a race. And when I get done, I put the medal in a box with the rest of the medals and go home and sleep on the couch with my dog. I don't post photos on social media or buy "another 26.2 sticker" - it's for me.

If this wasn't mentioned already, Carlos Lopes was 38 when he won the Olympic marathon in '84. Would you like to ask him why he did it at that age?

Exactly..if you're running a 5k hard af (relative to your own top end pace) 5ks are not for the faint of heart. Don't be fooled by 3.1

He could ask Jack Foster, Ron Hill, John Campbell, Martin Espinoza. Well, it would be tough to ask Jack but his family probably could answer. It's really a silly question.
