I never ran a 1500/1600 until college. Started out as a freshmen running the 100/200. Typical of a high school track coach, I was one of the fastest in the 100 the first day of practice. Didn't figure out I was a middle distance runner until April of my senior year when needing someone to run in the 4x800 relay.

I'm honestly surprised there's​ only one sub-4 guy that replied to this thread. I thought there would've been a couple more at least. Also, I like how people feel like they have to make excuses for their times like "was sick", or "coach sucked". Dude, everyone has setbacks. Stop qualifying your times with dumb crap like that.

I never did any off season training... regretting that after a couple of years. Sophomore and senior year of high school I was coming off of an injury and meningitis respectively. When I ran the 4:53 junior year I had still never broken 5 minutes, but could run 5 flat in practice and PE on command, just took the right race, strategy, and visualization to get it to happen. I'm training for 5K right now but once this race in August happens I plan on training for the mile and going sub 4:30.
