https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFfT2FR9ij4he jogged around to 600 & last 400 in a 1'46.9 was ~ 53.8 with splits of
~ 53.8 / 53.1
( there was 0.2s clock error, so that included )
he had some serious wide on last 200, likely 0.2/0.3s worse off
his last 200 was great !!!
it was actual 24.9 but with wide running on last bend
it was intrinsic ~
~ 24.6 !!!
i can offer some math :
53.8 / 53.1 off 2s +ve splits is ~ 1'46-flat from a formula
that assumes a last 200 of ~ 27.25 !!! from a formula
to run 24.6 is off the charts !!!
it likely is kick consistent at worst with a 1'44+ indoors & i mean low-end
1'44+ indoors shoud offer you 1'42+ outdoors
the Kid shoud be looking for with his incredible speed reserve, if 0 wind & smooth 24-low / 50-low
( 49+ is stoopid
you don't run 50-flat unless you aim for 1'42.0 )
~ 1'42.75 !!!
You are hilariously ignorant.

If we let this happen, pay through our taxes to fund these ventures, displace domestic athletes, have the Kenya project represent the USA, turn more people off of the sport all for the sake of winning/saving a job, what in blazes are we thinking.
UTEP is abusing the spirit of the NCAA system, U.S. tax payers money, overwhelmingly creating experiences, degrees for a Kenyan pipeline of athletes from the coaches home town.
This program is messing with Texas. It is highly probable the coach is making bank back in Kenya.

How many Texas kids run sub 1:51/4:07/8:55 as a junior? If they haven't done that, they're not worth big money. And how many Texans that run that have stuck around Texas? Much less had ANY interest in UTEP? You clearly don't coach at the NCAA level for a living...

- No doubt, this is UTEP Miner T&F's business model & its overt --- they've got a well educated & professional coaching staff as well ... again 5 of 9 are from foreign countries: Finland, Jamaica, France, Kenya. In fact, a strong majority of the coaches either grew up with the program or have been their for more than 5 years which I consider a long time. UTEP's "in it to win it" with a STRONG emphasis on distance & field events. All to say, they've allowed Coach Ereng to EXCLUSIVELY resource his hometown & country which has their own ethical issues ranging from doping-to-team selection thus setting conditions for potential shenanigans at Texas taxpayer expense.

- Why are you asking me these questions? Do you need assistance in research?
- UTEP: great facilities, altitude, good weather & running trails, well-funded, strong coaching staff .... what's not to like compared to going in debt w/a partial scholarship or walk-on to another program?
- You are correct, I am not a NCAA coach; however, I am a taxpayer and US Track & Field patriot. What was your point? If you are a NCAA coach & claim sub 1:51/4:07/8:55 requirements then it's most likely your program's either priced itself out of the market OR you don't understand how to identify/develop talent.

I was asking rhetorical questions because we both know the answer is likely around 2 - 3/year and about zero (maybe 1 every few years goes to UT like this year - otherwise those kids gave gone to the big programs and gotten the hell out of Texas). I'm sure the average 1:53/4:15/9:10 Texan would CONSIDER going to UTEP to avoid going into debt...the problem is that is a walk on. Even the 1:52/4:12/9:05 kid isn't getting much if anything to go to a program that expects to be and has been a top-tier distance program. If you don't believe me, look up published scholarship standards at Power Five programs...which UTEP expects to compete with. And yes, El Paso has a TERRIBLE reputation to everyone else in the country.
I don't disagree that UTEP's "system" makes me uncomfortable and there are possibly some conflicts of interest involved...but this is their answer working within the rules of an imperfect system...and they've clearly done it very well. Which is every coach's job.

"Taking" versus "Earning" ... a deliberate word choice. Rift Valley natives are both genetically gifted (physical attributes), geographically fortunate (high altitude living their entire life) & culturally focused on middle & long-distance running. Kenya's "C" team can beat our "A" team. So yes -- "Take" with both their gifts & minimal tax investment into the United States versus "Earn"!

- Performance Stratifcation: I don't agree with your assessment of Powerhouse 5 standards ... the marks you quote are way to high based on my research.
- El Paso Perception: this is unfortunate ... a gem for middle & long-distance running -- Franklin State Park & you can get even higher w/elevation in a hours drive.
- Failure to Diversify: I find it unfortunate that Coach Ereng's made ZERO investment in US or Border Region (Texas/NM/AZ) middle-distance & distance runners. Many programs become successful w/encouraging "walk-ons" to join the program. I see no evidence of that with Coach Ereng -- perhaps he's challenged with developing talent? The "walk-ons" should view "Running with the Kenyans" as an opportunity & Coach Ereng should invest in meet opportunities to build some program foundation outside Rift Valley. If not for his own coaching vitae. A XC roster w/only 2 Americans on either men's or women's program demonstrates that Coach Ereng's turned his back on those that fund the program. Maybe he's just lazy and/or not a good coach? Looks like Coach Ereng's one of the few UTEP coaches that's neither published, certified, or earned an advanced degree.
- Let's prevent human trafficking in NCAA T&F! I agree that UTEP's model is within the rules ... I'm simply calling for further scrutiny on potential irregularities for a foreigner coaching for a public instituion that recruits & trains 3D World athletes.
Human Trafficking .... I'm telling you, Coach Ereng's either responding to AK or he just doesn't know how to coach ... Manny K in the 800m at Brutus Hamilton defies logic unless 3D Party interests prevail.

I'm not asking you to agree. But this is what I do for a living. And no, we don't give a dime to a 1:52/4:12/9:05 kid as a junior unless we think they're a "diamond in the rough" (and yes, that kid is a dime a dozen these days - which makes them a diamond in the rough). Why? Because I know damn well that my colleagues aren't giving that kid a dime...so why should I?

Have you ever tried explaining this to a Texas kid? Hell, every El Paso kid I've ever recruited wanted the hell out of there.

I mean...this is nice and all & I don't necessarily disagree with some of your points...but what you described here has nothing to do with Coach Ereng's job description. It's what you wish his job description were...

So your true concern here is for the person that is being "trafficked?" How so?
At the end of the day, let me promise you...if UTEP were restricted to Texas kids, it doesn't matter who was coaching them...they'd be another dying mid-major nothing program.

- Scholarship Offers: OK .. I agree that if Power 5 programs are globally focused then it's unlikely that they would offer a US 1:52/4:12/9:05 athlete that probably started running as a Freshmen. Why bother?
- On Recruiting: I don't think its unusual for HS kids to want to leave their hometown whether it's El Paso or any other place. I'm encouraging them to move beyond Texas as well ....
- Job Description: OK, technically correct .... I'll just ignore the purpose of public universities.
- Human Trafficking: Really? Ereng shows up to Rift Valley with his Gold Medal street reds & US funded scholarships ... your saying that there is no risk of conflict of interest? When Manny K does his "1 & Done" this summer your telling me that Ereng won't be tempted with asking for a "Finders Fee"? UTEP lived this BS back in the 80s with Coach Banks' "Switch & Bait Scholarship Offers" on his foreign athletes & Hedenbrecht's "slush funds." C'mon man!
