I can't make up my mind if I like this or not.
On one hand, I think it will be great to see what the human body can do given the right conditions, pace, etc. everything about this race will essentially be in a bubble. Removes pretty much all the external variables.
Also should get some good publicity for the sport.
But my heart kinds hates it.
Pretty much every world record attempt on the marathon, I imagine, will be run this way. No more records set out in the streets, for all to see. Which is so much more exciting than watching a few men run around a circle 17.5 times for 2 hours.
Also, it limits those who will be able to push the record. How on earth would Bekele get into something like this? After all, I think he would be the best candidate for a race like this.
But then again, we finally have a marathon...on a track ;)

They should change running tracks to account for this.

But aren't the shoes about 5oz? You might have to have a shoe with more padding for a marathon, but at a shorter distance, what is the trade off for the spring effect v a lighter shoe (say NB RC5000 at 3.1oz)?
Or to put it another way, if you are a non-elite 5000m/10000m or 5k/10k runner, is it worth the extra money?

That said, I don't think anyone was ever doubting that he should be able to easily go sub 59 on a perfect course with the level he's been at over 26.2 recently. His 2:03:05 was not paced very optimally and is still equivalent to somewhere in the ballpark of 58:40s. Thus, unless this 59:18 was legitimately a fairly easy effort, I don't see any indication that Kipchoge will do something insane here. I'd like to see him go out in 61:15-61:30 here and hang on as best as he can. He probably has the capacity to go sub-2:02:30 on a Berlin-type course already, which would be about sub-2:03 here. However, I'm sure Nike will be stupid and push for a start that nobody can possibly handle, and Kipchoge will be the only finisher, with something like 2:08 (or everyone will drop out, including kipchoge when even 2:03-2:04 is well outside the realm of possibility)

Personally, I'm hoping they go out on sub-60 pace so we can get excited and then see physiology rule and see a massive blow up.

As good as Kipchoge is there is no way he only ran at 60% effort today. Maybe all out he would have hit low 58. It will be interesting to see the strategy in the full marathon, if they will go through the half in 59 high and try to duplicate it in the second half. It may be carnage out there, but maybe he can come back in 62 for a 2:01 high performance.
I still do not believe anyone is going to break two hours. Legitimately.

I guess my point was why does the IAAF matter in this instance? This record was not intended to be record eligible and any benefits that could come from skirting regulations would be taken. Having a computer maintain an absolutely consistent pace in the car would be as ideal as you could have it.
