Whoever the guitar player for Ted Leo and the Pharmacists is. The band in general is amazing.

it is kilgore's way of letting you know that he is now openly homosexual
Les Claypool of Primus. Wow.
Claypool is phenomenal on bass (absolutely no doubt whatsoever...check out "Oysterhead" which he did with members of THE POLICE and PHISH, opeland and Anastasio), but to direct a reply to the Hendrix fans I will toss out a name that is long gone:
Terry Kath
He was the original guitarist with Chicago (don't laugh), back when they kicked utt with some SERIOUS politically-relevant rock and blues (before they got into the balads fixation),the horn section made them distinctive.
Hendrix himself said in so many words to one of the original members of Chicago "your guitar player is better than me".
SRV was indeed a monster, but he, if still alive, might likely say he was influenced by Hendrix. I recently watched a re-run of "Blackhawk Down"; on it was the Hendrix classic "VooDoo Child", I recognized it from the first chords. What startled me was when SRV's vocal kicked in...I was completely surprised and thought
"Wow, that was a faithful rendition of that tune. Stevie must have been a Hendrix fan."
Jimmy Page
Hendrix
and of course, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez(pretty sureI got the name right) of The Mars volta.

steve vai or yingwe malmsteen
No real order here:
Clapton
Page
Hendrix
Satriani
Steve Vai, I guess
Allman
Betts
Townshend knew a lot about music, but just couldn't play it.
buddy guy!
Now we're talking Dr. Rosen! I agree with you for the most part. You mention a typical who's who in the drumming world and that's cool. Certainly Buddy, Tony, Cobham and Bozzio are from planet drum, but there are sooo many good drummers out there that lay it down and make it feel good minus the chops. I'm not saying these guys can't/couldn't do that, I'm just saying that there's a whole lot more to it than chops. The music's first!
I mention Bonham because originally, this thread was a Rock arena.
C'mon you guys have never seen Prince play!!! Awesome gutairist except for that symbol thinggy.....
Gotta add a name for best drummer. Dave Grohl
He hits the drums harder than anyone and his bass pedal rhythm on Smells like Teen Spirit is unmatched!! Probably the only modern drummer who could fill in for any band.
Damn, I miss Duane Allman.
I wish he was still around.
Also got one to add to greatest guitar player:
The guitar players in Lynryd Skynryd...Free Bird= sick.
