Shaq Walker appeal

Will he be put into finals? I think not as It appeared he was the one who encroached-- but perhaps even more important is that he's not in a Nike kit. Runners going pro should not underestimate the intangible benefits of being a Nike athlete. What say ye?

Walker being one of the top ranked guys shouldn't have anything to do with the ruling, but it does have something to do with the positions coming off the rail.
Johnson was tucked on the inside of lane 1, with Walker in the great position in lane 2. Murphy knew he needed to pass, ran wide along with Jock. Engles was just hoping things opened up, but tactically was in a very bad spot with 100m to go. I do think their level of abilities had something to do with how things played out.
Johnson did move out to lane 2, which caused all the switching around. I'd say Walker reacted to that move, and Engles was back to being trapped inside. Walker actually had room to move in, then Engles tried to move around and clipped Walker.
My take on the call: Engles was given a pass because he actually fell. Without the fall, Engles doesn't move on. With 100m to go, Walker was ahead and had better position... it is funny how the faster guy would be ahead with 60m to go..

Another Nike athlete, Isiah Young, was a DQ (false start) in his heat of the 100 and yet was advanced to the semi final. He is, not coincidently a former Ole miss runner. So he can do no wrong. All under the watchful (read: helpful) eye of Ole Miss head coach, Connie Price Smith. I think there is something to this--preferential treatment.

Good grief. It doesn't matter why he came in.
The point is that he cut in on Engels, and caused the collision.
I don't know either of them and would just as soon see Walker do well,
but unfortunately he's the one who did the cutting, and that's why he is DQ'd.
It absolutely matters that Walker changed his direction in the straight because of the runner in front of him and the pertinent USATF rule expressly says so.
Rule 163.3:
"Each competitor shall run in a direct line after entering the final straightaway in all races of two or more turns unless there is another competitor in his or her path."
That is a critical "unless." Most interference claims in the final straight involve runners who are leading (or have a clear path). Walker is allowed to change his path to react to the runner in front of him and he's not supposed to have eyes in the back of his head.
If you put yourself in a position where you are "third in line" as Engels did, you can't just complain that "second in line" weaved. He's allowed to weave.
Terrible call. All the more so because neither of them was likely going to qualify and Engels put himself in a position where he was trailing a runner who wasn't going to qualify.

The frustration, as shown by this post, is that preferential treatment is being shown. There should be no preference/bias/etc... shown in this sport. Walker should be in the final.

Walker is not allowed to cut people off, nor to knock people off the track. He has to be clear to move over, and he wasn't.

Just seeing this. Walker ran in lane 1 the entire race (except 3 steps at 600m). If you're going to run up on the inside of a guy that has ran lane one the whole race, it's your fault if contact is made. Bad Bad Call. Shame on USATF.

Not true. He may have stepped over the line once- but he ran lane 1 the entire race- watch it.

I'd like to see the violators DQ'd. These trials have been way too easy on them, and this made the cutting off, pushing and shoving get worse in subsequent races.
