Exactly, the answer is Rupp. I really like Jäger and am excited about his ability. I probably follow him , Derrick and others more than Rupp but your bias against Rupp is odd. 1. You always harp on how Galen's mile speed improvement is suspicious but when Jäger improved more in the mile at the same age you had nothing to say.2. jager did not win the race. It's a steeplechase, you have to clear the barriers. We all wish he did that and broke 8:00. He did not. I am confident he will break 8:00 and I bet he will eventually be faster than Rupp and Solinsky over 5000. 3. Rupp beat everyone who was around to run the 10000 that year. The Paris Gebremeskel example was good. It's also like arguing the the Houston Rockets did not win an NBA title because Michael Jordan took a year or two off. Should Rupp have not bothered racing that day? And to the guys who are complaining about pacing - how many times did the great runners follow a pacer? And didn't Solinsky follow Rupp whence set the AR? All of those were legitimate runs too.

And for God's sake, you're the 'co-founder' of one of the world's most popular websites devoted to distance running - such as it is.... learn the history of the sport!

I'm pretty sure that that this has never happened, considering it would be really hard to win a big international race without using any tactics.

When I saw the question, given I recently turned 62, Greg Meyer was also the first name that occurred to me. Shorter and Rodgers were past prime by then. It has always baffled me how American marathon running went downhill so quickly after Meyer's great race. It has also always amazed me that in the 90s, the U.S. men had exactly one world class athlete at every event 1,500 up to the marathon, and pretty much no one after that particular guy: Holman in the 1,500, Croghan in the steeple, Kennedy in the 5,000, Todd Williams in the 10,000, and Kempainen in the marathon. They were all competitive world class athletes, but off the top of my head, I don't recall any of them winning a major international race.

After reading other posters, I'm persuaded that as the question was posed by Rojo, Rupp's Pre win in 2014 is the right answer. Merry Christmas.

If it's not Rupp, it's Nenow.

If it's not Nenow, it's Frank Shorter -- he ran away from EVERYONE!!!!!!!!! in the Olympics!!!! Shorter is as American as you can get ... His father was in the Army in Post WWII Germany.

Mills out kicked better runners because he was forced into a dry area of the track. Maybe the best TACTICAL win ever but not a dominant international win like Shorter.

Should also be noted that 76' olympic marathon could technically be included because like the Russians of today the Germans back then had a doping program and Cierpinski was juiced which would leave Frank as the Gold, defending 76' Olympic marathon champion.
