His coach really effed up. He had to have known he was passing up his closest chance at coaching a sub 4:00 miler when he cut him from the team. I don't care how cocky/out of line he was, this is a piece of T&F history I would want to be a part of.

18, 19 or 20-doesn't matter. The training environment, access to facilities/resources, and lifestyle change dramatically when you get to college. He did this training with other high schoolers (until a few weeks ago). Heck, he still has to raise his hand and ask to go to the bathroom during class.

Anyway, the coaches will get their credit. If the age cheat is at that high school, and he is being called a high school four minute miler, then he will be listed from that school.

Training age is much more important than actual age.

What's the difference between starting training at 15 vs 14? Assuming of course you start running in high school. Some kids start running in 6th grade or earlier. What if a HSer breaks 4 but has been running since 5th grade. Is that any less special?

The only benefit with his age would be possible hormone increases (ie: testosterone) but even that fluctuates wildly and any sub 4 HS miler most likely has matured faster than his peers anyway. Remember Webb?

Haha, I actually really wonder what his coach did when he found out Maton had broken 4. What kind of idiot has a talent like this on the team and freaks out because he does his own thing on the warm up? Of course he should, he's basically as good as a lot of elite collegians.

Don't be so ignorant. There is a cutoff established in every state and Maton is under that cutoff. The very valid reason some kids start late i s that they are very small and may be bullied by larger classmates. Others are not socially developed enough. There are parents who purposely hold a kid back so he has a little advantage in sports but the cutoffs are clearly established and never includes 20 year olds.

How would you classify a preemie born 3 months early in august? Would you make that child start school right after their 5th birthday?

Let's look at this the other way 'round:

I was 16 when I graduated high school. I turned 19 between my sophomore and junior years of college. If I had run sub 4 in may (my birthday is in june), following my sophomore year should that have counted as a high school record since I was still 18?

If all of you who are dismissing Maton's time can sincerely answer 'yes' to that question, then, carry on belittling a performance that most of us would like to celebrate, as it might help the sport. Otherwise? Shut up.

I graduated high school when I was 9.

Does anyone have a list of US JR athletes that have broke 4? Let's look it in that light.

What struck me at the end of this video was how interested/excited Geoghegan was after he finished. He looks back once, then does a double take realizing it is Maton who may have gone sub-4, and seems pretty happy for him. Nice to see that kind of support. (Jenkins and rabbit Matt Minor also showed nice support).

I don't have any problem with high schoolers being 19 or 29. I have a problem with letting a 19 year compete in high school sports. The cutoff to be allowed to compete should be 18 years 364 days.

If someone needs lots of extra years to complete that very difficult road to high school graduation, no problem. Just don't let them run and steal glory or scholarships from age appropriate kids.
