Former D3 Athlete/Geneseo Alum Tim Chichester was 11th @ Boston in 2012

SUNY Fred. Alumni Nick Guarino finished second in the first round of the 800 trials at US Champs last year, just missing out behind Nick Symmonds, who by the way also was a D3 Athlete

Nick Rock was part of the Gold Winning 4x4 @ Sydnery Olympics, also won silver in the open 400 @ world champs the next year-attended U-W Lacrosse

Will Leer is another.

These are just a few of the many impressive performance, and athletes that were are former D3 athletes. Many other threads have discussed this topic if you want more examples.

If these are JV Performances than I would like to know your definition of Varsity....

Anyways, back on topic, st. Olaf's regional was bush league, and I predict Olaf barely getting 5th, and the rest of the qualifiers from that regional in the bottom 5 places of the race, no question.

If they could run: Oshkosh, probably 12th this year, and Platville probably 10th place this year

But they don't deserve to run bc an equally important part of d3 nationals is enjoying the all 30+ minute 8Ks

Other than his name being Andrew Rock, this. Pretty sure he's the only D3 athlete to run under 46 seconds in the 400 while still competing for the school.

St. Olaf could have darn near beaten Eau Claire and definitely would have beaten Lacrosse with their times from their regionals meet... which was on a course that is at least 20-25 seconds slower than Oshkosh. Barely 5th? Yeah right.

Eau Claire's number five will kill them at the national meet. There are going to be tons of guys between him and Olaf's fifth guy. And Thorson and Mugan are no better than Wintheiser or Campbell, so they are in trouble. Lacrosse's pack will have to move up if they want to beat St. Olaf. But I don't foresee that happening as I don't think Kerska and Linner can match Brown and Campbell.

The splits were actually messed up b/c of timing/chip issues. CMU actually got out incredibly slow and got swallowed by the back of the pack

What happened to the Great Lakes at NCAAs? Their regional meet was on the NCAA course and it seems like a lot of people had really off races. Course was a bit slick with the mud, but not that slow.

D3 is about as good as a 2nd tier DI conference. Once every few years there is a standout, who could be a DI level athlete. And you can count on 1 hand - Moses, Paranya, Leer, Symmonds - the D3 athletes who were world class. Any DI conference has the same history - a medalist or two, some solid records, and a lot of OK athletes.

So give up the nonsense about, "D3 is as good as D1". Its not. Grow up.

Saturday was an ok race. Surprised St. O could not pull it off w/ their 1-2 punch. NCC seemed out if it. They were lucky.

I'd argue that some of the top D3 conferences are stronger than some of the lower level D1 ones.

The best womens D1 conference are better than some D3 conferences.

And if the D3 meet was held on the moon, the times would be just as fast as the D1 meet.

Whatever you need to make yourself feel better. The best D3 runners are a dime a dozen in D1. McKenna Ramos won 3 D3 champs and is now just another guy at Wisco, who will probably be forgotten in 4 years.

His post wasn't implying that. I don't think you'll find a single person who argues that D3 is as good as D1, so drop the strawman. OK, the top D3 runners are D1-calibre athletes, and there have been some D3 athletes who were elite. It's basically an order of magnitude below D1, where maybe 1% of athletes have the ability to become elite. We all know this, but there's no point in having this discussion when it's already been done to death. Why don't you find something more constructive to do than trolling D3 threads?

As a former D3 runner myself for a better program (not the best by a longshot), I can say there are more than a few people in D3 saying, "we/you are just as good as those D1 guys". When I was running, it motivated me a little more. But now I think it was stupid. Being a D3 national champion is a nice feather in your cap, but there was never much modesty. A quick drive down the road, and these national champions would get smoked by the D1 b-team in most conferences.

Its like winning D1. You are good, and maybe one of the best in the country, but you are not the best in the world - not even close. Some NCAA champions do go on to be medalist, but most don't.

If you want to see what I am talking about, look at the "How high could NCC place in D1 XC". Some people saying top 5? Absurd stuff. NCC at their best would not be able to sniff the jockstraps of the top 10 Midwest D1 XC teams.

This is an anonymous forum, I like d3 running for a number of reasons, but it seems silly when people say stuff like this about how great d3 is, so I make a comment or two.

Just a counter-point to this...it's not the top DIII athletes' fault that this comparison is made, so let's not start belittling their accomplishments because some people are a little insensitive. They obviously had their reasons for not going to DI, and some would argue that some of those lesser DI schools aren't that appealing to train at, over some of the DIII schools where you get some great coaching, great academics, and a more personal experience. I doubt that most of those top DIII runners are carrying a big chip on their shoulder. They probably, actually, have a more practical outlook on their future in running.
