Thanks for your contributions, Sage, but I have to disagree with this. It's not an either/or situation. Profile matters, yes, but so does distance. If it didn't, I suspect you'd have run a 100 by now. That you haven't done so shows that - I think correctly - you view the distance itself as a unique challenge, and one that can wait.

VK is steep and technical, the Skyraces are steep and technical. Kilian does not do any races where he shows he can run fast on less technical terrain. He has no range my friend. Every athlete who can excel in skyrace can also excel at VK. 800m runners do not excel at half marathon jacka$$.
Also Kilian is not a "World Champion". The World Mountain Running Champs was won by a Ugandan this year by large margin. Skyracing is not a legit world title, there are only a handful of countries competing and no africans. He won against a mostly weak European field in most of his races. KUDOS big whoop. Lets see him step into mountain running or some races that aren't just technical terrain
Yeah...that's why there are so many VK runners that don't run or at least excel at ultras...it's always Kilian Jornet, and maybe a few others and the rerst are purely VK runners, like the Twin Demateis for example...
If you think road runners should "step up" and do something more technical why shouldn't this Jornett guy do the same?
The issue people will never be happy. This guy wanted him to do something more technical. I don't think road runners should step up. I am saying, if they are asking Kilian to step down, they also need to ask road runners to step up and prove it. There is too much speculation.
What I have been trying to get across for the very beginning, is we only know what has been done. People need to stop hating on Kilian because they think some random east African can run faster in ultras. Maybe they can, but we won't know until they actually do it. Ultras are different than marathons, just like marathons are different than 10k's and the 1500.
While I love watching how fast guys run on the roads and track, I think what Kilian does is great too. Yes, he makes a living at it, but he obviously loves what he does. Seems most of the east Africans are only in it for the money, and when the money dries up, they stop running altogether.
There's just dixie cup depth in ultras. Right now ultra guys are the worst athletes of the distance running world. Maybe it will improve once there's more money and more east africans involved.

I would offer Kilian $1M from my company if he runs a sub-2:10 Marathon. I don't think he can, because mentally, he is very, very weak on the roads. He just doesn't like to run flat and fast. He likes to walk, powerclimb, run downhill, go uphill, stop, eat, walk. He is an adventurer. He does not have the mindset (nor the body) to pump out 26 consecutive sub-5:00 miles or 42 sub-3:00/km.
Spend some time talking to Kilian, and you will find out that he considers himself an adventurer and not a runner.
And by the way, "like wow" the Africans stop running not when the money dries up, but when they become millionaires in their countries and can provide a lifetime of change for their families, friends, and communities. I cannot fault that. In that sense, Kilian is selfish.

I don't care if he drops down to run a marathon or not, and I KNOW that East Africans could beat up on him in his own event. Back home in the Basque Country there are lots or mountain running races.
To one of these races came five or six years ago a group of ethiopians (of course not top level, but known to us because of being running some road races in northern and central Spain for some months, maybe 1h4-1h6 type in a half). We all expected them to win the money prizes in that event, but in the end of the five or six ethiopians only one did a decent race, finishing third or fourth, the rest dropped back when the slopes came, even I, a 2h32 marathoner at the moment but on the other hand familiar with the course, could easily left them behind and earn some small money.
Since then I very much doubt that africans could be that fast in mountain running.

you know them? EH erronka is a race long and fast, whereas Zegama is tougher than tough and technical, not my thing at all.
it was another, Zierbana, with (small) money prizes for the first 10 (400 Euros for the winner), a type of race (around 25 k with small money prizes) wich abounds round here, we have at least one every weekend all year round. Is not surprising that the best runners in the Basque Country and I would say in Spain are mountain runners rather than road or track runners, these last few years.
Do you not realize they won't be running 4:41 per mile for 100 miles, right? That the pace in the marathon is more pedestrian than the pace in a 3k. So in this line of thought, marathons are for pussies. Hell, the pace in the 1500 is pedestrian compared to the 100. 1500's are for pussies.STFU

I know those 2 and Hiru Hiraundiak. Its good you have such amount of races around Euskal Herria, its very important to promote the sport. Having good elite runners like Jabi Dominguez, Iker Karrera or Aritz Egea, in male. and probably some of the best females, Ohianna Kortazar or Maite Maiora is also good to attract people, isn't it?
