You might want to check your SEC rulebook. Internal SEC transfers have to sit out an additional year on top of standard NCAA transfer guidelines.Transferring from SEC to another conference = sit out a year but you still have your 4 years in 5. Transfer between two SEC schools and you have to sit a year AND lose a season of eligibility, giving you 3 years in 5. I'm not sure this is true. Rojo or any coach reading this would know. My understanding was that I entered into a contract with the university that they had to honor as long as I was compliant (i.e grades, attending practice, getting treatment, etc). And I recall it being next to impossible to get girls off the roster who hadn't run in years but continued to show up and get treatment everyday. There is no way 1000's of student-athletes are accepting scholarships each year that the university has no contractual liability to uphold.

Well, if you are right, then why was she able to cut them, and why did the article say is it legal/allowed for her to do that? The debate hasn't been whether she did something wrong/illegal, it is whether she did something ethical. Her actions are within the NCAA rules.

Athletic scholarships in the NCAA have always been one-year renewable scholarships.

These girls are being cut-off from college competition; the scholarship thing is not the issue.

SEC rules mandate a 1 year sit if you go within the SEC. So, if if they transfer to another SEC school, they cannot compete for one year. It is up to BAS if they have to sit if they transfer to another institution outside the SEC. That is up to BAS however if they are cut then I would not expect too much from Tenn.

I sincerely hope that recruits are reading that article from the OP.

The girls have restrictions in that they cannot leave for a full academic year and even then they cannot go to another SEC school without sitting ANOTHER year in residence.

The instances you cite are ones where it is the athlete who is trying to leave the university, not the other way around.

I am very close to this situation and know for fact that the parents did not reach out to the press. The newspaper was made aware by a 3rd party and the newspaper reached out to the parents to get the scoop. The newspaper also reached out to UT to get their side and UT gave no response.

I know the facts in the story to be true. Sullivan's decision to cut the 3 scholarship athletes was about money. It is my belief that she expects them to be gone by January and will attempt to bring in JUCO transfers or foreign athletes that have already posted marks that would score in the conference. Seems like they want to win now at any cost.

This approach will likely backfire. I assure you that UT will not get any top rated recruit from the states of Alabaman, Georiga or N Carolina as long as Beth is the coach. THis will likely start to impact football recruiting as well.

This was a poor decision to let these young ladies go and the program will be hurt by it for some time.

This will likely be a front page google result for Coach Sullivan for time to come...easy for the other SEC coaches to drop hints to google her when competing for athletes? Will that be fair play too?

Since Sullivan has been coaching for a long time why is there no former athletes that ran for her saying anything positive or negative about what it is like to be coached by her.

I know she is generally not liked but is that by former runners of hers or just observers?

She coached by intimidation, and is pretty powerful in the sport. Fear of retribution.

I am calling these athletes "The September Six".

We owe it to the sport to keep the memory of what happened to these athletes alive and make sure no one every forgets what a poor decision BAS made in this case. She should not be in a position of authority.

We will keep the memory of what she did fresh in the minds of recruits and their parents for as long as it takes to make sure she is no longer in a position to harm anyone.

Only an evil person would f**k with the lives of 18 year-olds. She is the polar-opposite of all of the great coaches I've been privileged to meet during my lifetime. Great coaches all have the same psychological profile. Their motivations are all about and for their athletes. Bad coaches are all about themselves. BAS is all about one and only one thing -- the creeper in the mirror.

I don't see how Tennessee could possibly be "the vision" of any young athletes in the future. The fine print at the bottom of the scholarship contract is now exposed in BOLD-FACED TYPE at the top.
